The reason the name tag is to be worn on the right side of the shirt is because that is the hand you use to shake. Therefore when shaking the hand of someone you are just meeting the natural line for the eye to follow is your arm. So you place the name tag at the end of that line of vision. I really think it's a load of crap, but that's the reasoning behind it.

At my old job the name tag was on the left side. I've seen a lot of people with the tag on their left side.

I think that the shirt will normally have a pocket on the left hand side and if you have a name tag on that side and you want to reach for something in the pocket, it is a hindrance, hence the best remedy is to wear it on the right hand side apart from the fact about the handshake.

No, it's more a matter of custom. People look to the left when meeting new people, putting the name tag there just makes sure it is in the place they will first look.

I usually wear a name tag on the left side.

If you are right handed, then when you shake hands you will see the name tag better because the left side will be turned away slightly. This is why right handed people should put it on the right side, it is more visible when shaking hands.
Left handed = left side.

I actually always put a name tag on the left side of my chest... nobody has shot me or arrested me for it. Don't know about any rules, but no-one has called me out for breaking it yet.
