Davidson County sheriff's deputies will begin checking the immigration status of every foreign-born person who passes though the Metro Jail under a new program, department officials announced today. The approval, announced today, comes in response to a request by Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau, seeking a federal immigration computer system and full-time immigration officer placed in the county jail.

Metro police Chief Ronal Serpas and Gov. Phil Bredesen have voiced support for the program.

Hall's request comes after several high-profile crimes after which illegal immigrants were charged. In some cases, the immigrants had been arrested repeatedly in the midstate, without being processed through the federal immigration system.

Nashville's program is patterned after a similar effort in Charlotte, N.C. That city's program has been praised by the sheriff there and by some local officials. It has also raised questions, however, about whether zealous police officers are improperly targeting immigrants and whether federal authorities can handle the increased number of detainees.

The next step in the process for Davidson County's program, calls for federal and local officials to negotiate a Memorandum of Understanding. No date has been announced for the negotiations.

Every time we hand things over to the liberals, they screw things up then blame Republicans. We get tired of it because when they screw up, they do it big and it takes forever if at all to correct it. All I know is that I see that all these illegals in this country have really caused an enormous amount of problems and every time someone tries to do anything about it the dems start screaming and name calling (as usual). We need to stop backing down from the bully dems and get something done...but personally, I don't see what's wrong with asking people for their green cards. We all have to produce our drivers license and registration when we're pulled over by the police. We have to show credit cards, IDs and every thing else when we want to cash a check or whatever...what makes illegals so effing special??

I say it's about time! Yee-haw! I mean I'm a citizen and when they pull me over they can find out if I'm wanted in other states etc. I'm checked. It makes no sense what-so-ever to not have to check them. I'm tired of this dancing around and not asking legitament questions because it's offends a group of people. If there weren't and OBVIOUS 20 million in our midst they might have something to whine about. I mean if there were a rash of horrible crimes done to Mexicans and the profile was blonde white men between the age of 21 and 35.....they wouldn't consider it profiling if the police checked blonde white men in that age group and I doubt there'd be too many white people that would be offended if that's what it took to catch the criminals. As I see it we're unfairly being targeted and undergoing screens and such just the obvious ones aren't "offended". I'm glad they are doing it and I hope they do more!

While it is a concept I personally agree with I think it is putting the cart before the horse to start nabbing these criminals while our southern border is still wide open. It does no good to deport them just to have them return at will.

I also fail to see how officers who are enforcing the law can be considered over zealous. Isn't their job to catch criminals? The more they catch the better they serve and protect us.

I applaud Nashville and Davidson County as well as the good folks down in Charlotte.

It is a start. It should be implemented on routine traffic stops. Whenever an officer pulls you over they always run wants and warrants. Immigration status should be part of the package. Most of the illegals would stop driving which is fine.

What took them so long? Isn't it common sense to check every-ones status?
I mean they check for warrants and traffic tickets why not immigration status.
Anyways it is progress, if only everyone would do the same it might really help the cause.

Every city and state should do more of this, they are only doing what Washington will not do. Who knows, some day may be the nuts in Washington will wake up.

Every City needs to do this!! Those who do not follow the laws to live here, should be caught and sent back home! There is a right way to be able to live here. This was started to protect us from the rest of the world. Now I am not saying that every person who comes here is bad but we do need to watch who is here and why!!
