that is a semi colon, aka parataxis.

it is used to separate two ideas which (perhaps do not agree, but) are similar. It can be used to replace a period and join the two ideas to give more bold meaning to a sentence.


For example:

"My brother likes jazz music; he's got 10 jazz records."

"I've always been in love with the smooth ride of a sailboat; my mother hates it."
