Is it simply trashed? Sold off to local farms for animal feed? Or donated to local food banks?

When I say "produce" I mean fruits and veges.

A lot of the time it is simply discarded in the trash, thus the term "dumpster shopping" as many homeless go into the dumpsters and eat these. Just watched an piece on the TV last week where even some middle class folks have taken to dumpster dumping and using these produce goods for their own consumption at home. They argued that it saved them lots of money and that they only select items that are sealed and still look good. Sad part is that a lot of shelters cannot accept these goods as they are past their due dates.
