I am a dark blonde and want to dye my hair to a lighter, platinum blonde. I want to use over the counter do it yourself dyes to save money. Are the over the counter dyes safe? Can they make your hair fall out? Can hair dye cause cancer? How often will I need to do my roots? Do I dye my eyebrows too so they match or leave them alone? Will I need a special shampoo to maintain my hair color? I use dandruff shampoo. Will dandruff shampoo dull my hair color? What is the difference between salon dyes and over the counter dyes? Are over the counter dyes lower quality than salon dyes? Will the chlorine in the city water ruin my hair dye?

Don't do it!!! the chemicals in the box colors are awful. They are metallic dyes that are very harsh and will interfere with any other chemical you may try putting on your hair-even more haircolor, and it even makes it difficult for a stylist to remove it. because this box isn't formulated for you..most people get really golden or orangy results. this is because the come with a high volume of peroxide in them that you most likely don't require for your hair. Not to mention the high levels of ammonia in the actual color-salon prof. products are soooo much better.
A professional can formulate for you exactly what your hair needs, and keep your hair healthy too! as for upkeep-any kind of colored hair you should use a good (prof.) color safe shampoo...I won't go into all the harsh sulfates that are in grocery store shampoos.......you shouldn't use dandruff shampoo all the time, you may still think you have it but that's because the dandruff shampoo is drying out your scalp. You need a good moisturizing color safe shampoo, and you can clarify your hair once a week or so with a shampoo like Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo. You will find this is like the upscale version of dandruff shampoo, it will make your scalp feel all minty clean. as for the water-we all deal with it...thats y u need good products-be happy you don't have well water-my goodness it's so awful on my hair lol :)

Yes, please go to a salon at least for your initial hair tinting. After that you could probably do your roots at home (about every 4 to 6 weeks). Salon dyes are considered to be professional quality as compared to store-bought brands, however that is a matter of opinion. Just remember platinum hair is extremely harsh on your hair, you should remember to condition your hair at least several times a week. Hair dye produced after the early 80s is safe to use and not linked to cancer, so you are ok.

well.. i personally use over the counter hair dyes.. but i dye my hair darker... (i got tired of being a blonde)... so they work pretty okay for me... its harder (from what my friends say) to lighten your hair using an O.T.C. product. usually that involves bleaching... and thats difficult cause if you dont know what youre doin it might turn out white or something. you never wanna mess up your hair.. so best bet would be to use a salon quality product. ask the retailers about their products, and which is best.

special hair color shampoos work wonders! they keep youre new color from fading and keeps the shine boosted up and brilliant. i swear by john freeda's brilliant brunette shampoo and conditioner. i also use Aussie styling products. when i was blonde the brilliant blonde was my life saver!

as for eyebrows... some dye them.. but i personally would not want to have hair dye that close to my eye on such a sensitive part of my face.
and re-coloring... you choose when to do that yourself... usually every 8 weeks..

My reaction on your query will probable disappoint you. nonetheless hairdressers and cosmetics distributors might such as you to have faith in any different case, in many cases the chemical compounds used to dye hair are unfavorable to the structural integrity of the hair shaft. counsel you may assemble in this remember from those with a vested activity will in all probability permit you comprehend that loss of existence hair is a innocuous technique. you may in all probability get closer to the certainty in case you have been to pose your query to a great dermatologist. Hair dye would upload man made pigment via a manner of oxidation, or it eliminate organic pigment , noted as alleviation, from the hair. whilst expert hairdresser, makes use of this technique, the wear and tear is amazingly minimum, virtually not something. whilst the hair is broken above 30%, the wear and tear will become greater substantive. greater chemical, greater injury.

you are talking about platinum blonde? i would consult with a salon it does not cost anything take in a picture. bleaching hair is sooo risky because it risks breakage and bleaching strips everything right out. go to a salon please!
