The tooth fairy never takes my children's teeth. She mearly inspects them to make sure the children are brushing their teeth properly. If the teeth look great, the kids get big bucks. If they don't look so good, less money. If the teeth have cavities, just a penny.
It helps my children brush their teeth and they get to keep them. My oldest daughter, now 7, likes to write letters to the tooth fairy explaining how she brushes her teeth twice a day.

Don't you know the tooth fairy gives the tooth back to the mom to keep in a small bottle! At least that was my way of doing it. And the tooth fairy is giving bigger rewards these days. Darn inflation!

The tooth fairy takes it, and that is you.
The reason is so that you can save it for him. It can be entered into his baby book or childhood book. I have several of the teeth my kids lost and it is wonderful to remember. It will be great for them to show their kids too.
If you allow them to keep their tooth they will not believe in the magic of the tooth fairy (it is important like Santa Claus) and will miss out.
And they may lose it and lose memories.
I suggest you let them see it for the day and tell them it is very important not to lose it cause the tooth fairy is coming at night and will give them money for it. When they wake up they can find a shiny brand new dollar coin. It is a joy for kids and it helps them get over the FEAR of losing a tooth.

The tooth fairy could put the tooth in a special place to be retrieved at a later date.

have him put under his pillow and rite a note to the tooth fairy about how it is his first tooth and how he would like to keep it. then th "tooth fairy" can go and let him keep the tooth and give him the money. and have the "tooth fairy" rite a note back to him explaining who she is and how she hopes it didnt hurt to loose it. so he gets a good first impression of her. hope that helps, after that u and him can sit down and put it in hes book oor wat ever like the other person said

The tooth fairy took my kids first teeth, but put them in a special box to go inside their memory box of collectables to have when they are grown. This is actually where all my kids teeth have went.

If your son wants to keep it let him. Explain the tooth fairy to your son and what could happen if he leaves it under his pillow and then if he still want to keep it, let him. I would rather my child be sentimental than greedy anyhow.
