Go to the branch of service and start from there. there is wealth of information, links to each will get you there. The more information you have on your friend the better. Also try for a member listing in your Veterans of Foreign Wars or Legion pages.

If you have a friend/fam in the military they can access a database at us.army.mil for all persons in the military active and reserve
