The pain will travel down my arm to my fingers sometimes but will at times be primarily in the upper arm area and shoulder across to my neck. It has at times been as bad that the pain has also gone up into my ear. Sometimes it can be a sharp shooting pain but most times it is just a constant pain. I cannot lift my arm very high in any direction and when I do the pain is much worse but my arm will not move very high. I have been to a doctor a few times and all she continues to say is that it is tendonitis. She did have an xray done and it showed nothing. I did not injure it in any way that I can recall. I am now taking a muscle relaxant, Ibuprofen, and a painkiller for the pain and it barely touches the pain I am experiencing, I seen a doctor at a walk in clinic and this is all he did for me. Any ideas of what might be wrong with it? Or what I can do?

I have this same problem on occasion when I overuse my right arm. My rhuematologist thinks it is bursitis which is affecting the nerve that runs down my right arm. The pain is intense and the pain medication doesn't seem to touch it. I've had xrays which show nothing. It's frustrating. Best wishes to you.

It sounds like you pinched a nerve under your trap (the triangular muscle that connects your neck and shoulder). If the Xray showed nothing, you probably need to have an MRI to make sure you don't have a bulging or protruding disk impinging on your spinal cord between the c5-c6 vertebrae, since that will cause the same problem. The best way to get past this pain it to have someone press out the "trigger" point, which is where the muscle has bunched up around the nerve. I had this done once and it was one of the most painful experiences of my life, but really helped the pain go away. Also, a physical therapist will be able to help you do a stretching regimen to prevent it from re-pinching.

Good luck!

Try a deep tissue massage. It sounds like a muscle is tight in your neck, which can cause everything to hurt - including your ear!

If you are not happy with your doctor's advice, get a second opinion. That happens to me when I get heartburn. It can be very painful.
