My 6 month old daughter has it, and we are battling to keep it under control. We use Oilatum in the bath, and 50:50 all over twice a day - more often on the problem areas. We have Fucidin H which is ok for the dry scaly problem bits, and are trying Eumovate for her tummy, which looks more like a rash than scaly. Her clothes and bedding get an extra rinse cycle, its always a non-bio powder. We avoid wool next to her skin. I hate to see her scratch and pull at her skin, especially when she is tired.

We are seeing our GP AGAIN tomorrow, but I'm learning that everyone has a different experience with eczema. Do you have any good advice, or can you recommend any good websites/books etc?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I know how you must be feeling, I am 65 and was born with eczema. I grew up with all the remedies that have been mentioned here, but the most important thing is to protect your little one from scratching, as the itch from eczema is really upsetting. Little cotton mittens or gloves can be found at most pharmacies. My mother used to tie me into a pillow case at bedtime, but I was very young and cannot say if it worked. At one stage they used to put splints on my arms and legs to stop me being able to scratch! I used to have oatmeal added to my baths and later, the oilatum and other similar remedies.
Over the years, it has improved greatly. Funny enough, each time I had a child, my eczema faded a bit more.(I had 4!) I now find I can get by with using the Avon fragrance free shower gels, hand wash, moisturisers etc. and no longer have to use all the creams and potions prescribed by the Doctors. I cannot shower or bath without using a moisturiser all over, but I do find life quite a lot easier these days.
I hope your little one grows out of her symptoms soon and that you can help her not to feel too embarassed about her condition as she gets older, if it does not clear up soon. The doctors used to say that every 7 years your skin will change and the eczema should fade. I believe it will if you treat the symptons early enough and don't use any toiletries with perfume in them.
Good luck.

My son who is now nearly 4 yrs has suffered with eczema since he was 14mths - when I stopped breastfeeding and used formula.

The only thing I have found that works like magic is Probiotics (friendly bacteria). I heard about it on an aussie morning TV program about trials they were doing in Perth, Aus.

Over the course of days and weeks it was miraclulous to see how his eczema just faded away leaving lovely healthy and soft skin.

I dont need to use any moisturisers or other medication, and he can eat normally as well.

I do now though try and buy all his food, drink (milk incld) organically. I also do not use commercial soap or shampoos on him. I also use Ecover for washing all of our clothing and bedding.

The milk formula seemed to start his eczema, but I find that it is chemicals that make it flare up. Though being on a probiotic supplement means that if he does get a flare up, it has gone by the next day.

When he was really bad he was on the highest dosage, he is now on the daily dosage and we have had absolutely no eczema since Aug last year. Previous to that I had done some experimenting with soaps and washing powders and when the eczema flared up I just increased his dosage.

The best Probiotic I have found - and one of the most reasonably priced is Natures's Way Primadophilus Reuteri (the Reuteri bacteria is the same bacteria found in human breast milk)
Primadophilus Bifidus also helps if you cant get the Reuteri.

Infacol in the Uk have now introduced a droplet version with Reuteri, but that actually works out more expensive.

I buy the capsules, then open them up and put into yoghurt, though my son can now swallow capsules.

We have tried all the other various treatments - but Probiotics has been the only one that works so brillantly, is completely natural, and you can also give to a baby.

Try this website, I purchase them from the USA
www.betterlife.com
Also do a search on yahoo or google: probiotics Eczema.

For soaps etc
try greenbaby.co.uk
naturebotts.co.uk
spiritofnature.co.uk

GOOD LUCK! I know how heartwrenching it can be!

My little boy had eczema on his cheeks. I was not sure what method to use but I didn't want to make my boy go through any surgery treatments at this young age. Some suggested a plastic surgeon since it was in a very visible location but our family doctor recommend this natural guide.

Best Eczema Treatment?

My son was exactly the same...forever coming out in patches of raw dry skin. My GP prescribed ( i also think it is available over the counter now) Oilatum (if i remember the spelling right) It is a medicated bath oil for such skin complaints. Now bathing the little ones in it is quite a chore with it being oil based..Its like the hook a duck game trying to keep hold of them but it was brilliant and helped keep the raw patches at bay.

I was born with eczema and had to have bandages on my joints when I was 7-9 because of the open sores. As I got oder it did improve a little but it didn't clear up until I was 13 and sarted using homeopathy remedies. I cannot guarentee this will work for you - but again has worked for my cousin who 'got rid' of his in his twenties through homeopathy and my other cousin's daughter treated from the age of 18months. There's no remedy I can reccommend over the counter but it would be worth a consultation with a homeopth. As all remedies are natural they do no harm even if they do no good.

i used to have my hands bandaged too but it didnt help, you just rub the bandage on the eczema anyway. Betnovate is a really good cream. For a few years my gp got the type of cream wrong for me. He was giving me a clear dry oily type, then when i used Betnovate which was erm wetter and white it cleared it up whenever it came back. It took around 10 years to stop coming back! good luk to u an ur babi xx

I swear by Sudocream for my eczema - apply it twice a day, morning and night before bed - in the morning my eczema is mosturised and the cracks have healed. Sudocream is also used for nappy rash so it should be ok to use on your 6 month old daughter. Also, invest in some scratch mittens for her so she doesn't scratch and make herself bleed.
