Good brands: Artemis, Avoderm, Canine Caviar, Chicken Soup, Merrick, AgarX, Timberwolf Organics, Verus, Wellness, Wysong.
Okay brands: Innova, Evolve, Karma Organics, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Nature's Recipe, Nutro.
BAD brands: Pedigree, Purina, Iams, Kibbles N Bits, Science Diet, Eukanuba.
Anything from a supermarket is crap, and so is most of the stuff from Petsmart and Petco. You can order the best brands online at www.petfooddirect.com, or you can try finding a naturalist pet store in your area. Good luck!

Personally I use "Avoderm" and "Natural Ultramix". There are many good brands. But they are generally at the pet store. What I would strongly suggest is go to http://www.petco.com/petco_Page_PC_productlist_Nav_183_N_22+92.aspx
There you can read each products ingredients and get reviews. I have found this a great tool. Before I use to spend a half hour in the pet store reading labels.Go to the Petco web site even if you don't have that store in your area for food information. There are some brands that are breed specific since some breeds are more prone to problems. Good Shopping.
Oh, I do agree with most of the list Alyssa J has but Petco carries many of the brands she mentions and is a concise place to read ingredients.

Read the ingredients on the bags. Make sure their is no corn in them and that there are specific meat sources (the more the better) I have heard that if you want good quality and don't want to spend an outrageous amount of money there is a brand at Costco called Kirkland and it is supposed to be really good. It even rated about Nutro in some dogfood test and Nutro is a damn good food as well. (but expensive)

Inno Evo (I think that's how you spell it) is a really good dog food that is made out of mostly meat without any grains whatsoever. You can probably get it at your local petstore. It's about the healthiest food you can get for your dog. But if your pit is a pup, I'd avoid that one for now... it's so high in protein it could make a puppy sick.

Whole Dog Journal evaluates food. Good articles on what's good and bad for dogs. Their web site has a free article "How to Choose a Food" or something like that. www.whole-dog-journal.com

Do some research. Read the ingredients on the dog food. The first ingredient listed is the most and the second is the second most and so on.

I have used pedigree for all my dogs and they lived long happy lives, but if you want something better your gonna have to fork out more money.... you can try like science diet or eukanoba from petsmart or petco. I'm not sure they're better but if the saying is right you get what you pay for maybe it is!!!!
