The Institute of Medicine says a toddler needs about 1.3 liters of water a day. ?this is from plain drinking water and the water content everything he had that day.Be sure to offer water with during the day as a drink to avoid unwanted calories.

I have a 2 year old and I let her drink as much as she wants. I give her a glass of milk in the morning and some juice during the day but she can have all the water she wants. Depending on activity level she may need more or less drink

My son (age two) seems to drink a little less than he used to, but I think it was habit before (carrying around a sippy, etc.) rather than need. He's also less of a juice fiend these days (he's two).

After a little flu recently, my son's tongue had a white coating on it, which I learned is a symptom of dehydration.

I don't think you should be monitoring what goes in, but rather what comes out. Count the wet diapers and as long as there are several a day, they're fine.

They need about a liter of water a day, but, remember there's already alot of water in juice, fruits, veggies, and other foods.

As long as they are eating a few fruits and veggies a day and drinking milk and/or juice, they are probably getting enough water in their diet. It never hurts to replace a drink with water though every now and then.

You can also make sure they are getting enough water by keeping an eye on their urine. If it's dark, they probably aren't getting the right amount of water in their diet. The more water you consume, the lighter your urine will be. If your urine is dark, you are dehydrated.
