I was in the Marine reserves about 20 years ago and decided to call it quits after they reniged on a promise to pay educational benefits. I want to clean this up for my own gratification. Are there any options?

Get in contact with your Branches Correction or Appeal of Military records Branch. If you cannot find a number contact the VA. Losts of things will be taken into consideration but there is a good chance they can upgrade it. Now a days after 6 months you can get a upgrade in discharge. For the record a DD is not always awarded after a Court Martial like that one guy said. Discharge is up to the Commander on most seperations other than a regular ETS.

What did you do when they didn't pay the benefits? Something happened, and a court marshall had to of taken place. Whatever it must have been fairly serious. Most people, even when court martialled and kicked out, only receive a Bad Conduct Discharge.

You can try, but expect the worst. I don't foresee anything being changed.

Consult with the VA or with an attorney who's thoroughly familiar with Military Law. The military is exempt from much of what applies to the general population, so you need someone with a solid background regarding your situation. Good Luck!

The only way you can get a DD upgraded is to convince a board that you deserved a higher-level discharge.

BTW - a DD is only awarded as punishment after a court-martial (felony conviction) so it appears that there is more to this story than you are telling us.

You may want to contact a lawyer, especially one that has experience dealing with the military. I feel that will be your only chance of getting this turned around. Best of luck to you.

Good luck. You should have thought of that then. When you decide to get help from the VA, That will be denied too.

If you had a dishonorable discharge, they won't LET you re-enlist. You should get a lawyer who specializes in admin law.
