I use Excel a lot, and have done for years - without encountering the problem you describe unless I am using a seriously large spreadsheet with a lot of formulae and a PC with a slow processor and not enough memory.
Is it just Excel ?
Are your other programmes are working satisfactorily ? Word, Access, Outlook ?
If so, and it is only Excel that is causing you problems, is it particular spreadsheets ?
Does the same thing happen if you are using only simple sheets ?
It there a conflict with other software you are running ? Can you identify a correlation with other things you are doing on the PC at the same time - like running an MP3 player, or IE or your anti-virus software ?
If none of these things suggests an answer, I would suggest you try re-installing Excel in case one of the DLL files or another component file has become corrupted or is on a poor sector of your hard disk.
However, if it is just happening with larger spreadsheets you may need to think about upgrading your PC.
Sorry I can't be more specific but I hope these comments help.

It is always better to depend on system restore so that un- identified errors are undone with out affecting the basic operating system. I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

I agree with ICIP. There is errors in your PC. If your antispyware cannot detect it, better you adopt a system restore operation. It is safe and the problems can be rectified. You have to carefully select the date of restore. Ensure that the PC was functioning normally on the selected date for restoration. If you want to know an effective procedure for system restore please visit the following site.

If you're using Windows you can never be sure that you haven't got a virus or spyware that's slowing it down. Antivirus software only catches the ones it knows about.
I have a Mac and I never have the problem you're describing. I know of no Mac users who do. Of course, there are no Mac viruses, so maybe you should update your virus software and check again!

Despite others stating otherwise, I've NEVER had a problem with Excel. It's on e of the most stable and reliable programs I've used. I've had failures from some other programs from time to time, but never excel.
I would re-install it.

this happens a lot with excel.
it basically means that your PC has fallen into a boredom induced coma.
Solution, leave the spreadsheet and do something more fun
