If so, is there any problem with brinign it back into the city, would I have to register it again in the city of chicago or does that get taken care of during the purchasing process? While I am not a Chicago resident, I am an Illinois resident in the Chicagoland area (outside of Cook county though).

I have bought long guns at gun shows across state lines. In my case, I bought an assault rifle in Wisconsin.

To the best of my undrestanding, you can purchase a firearm anywhere in the US, but an out of state resident is subject to the stricter laws, the laws of their home state or the laws of the state they are in.

I am not familiar with the laws of Indiana, but it should be no different than buying a gun in Illinois. You will still be subject to the Illinois waiting period. You will still need a FOID card and background check. As you are in Chicago, I believe you will need to register the piece with Cook county. If Indiana laws are more strict, then you have to abide by their laws and/or both states' laws.

With this in mind, if you buy from an out of state gun show, the Illinois waiting period is a pain in the ***. If you buy a rifle, you won't be able to pick it up for 24 hours. If you are not going to be at the show in 24 hours (or if it is the last day of the show), the gun has to be shipped to an FFL holder in the state of Illinois and you will have to pick up the firearm from them.

Just to complete the example, Illinois requires a FOID card to purchase a firearm. If someone from Indiana comes to Illinos and wants to buy a gun, they would be unable to do so since Illinois' laws are more strict (though I think there is a loophole if an out of state resident has a IL hunting license, then they can buy a firearm consistant with the hunting season they are in state for).

The last time I checked into buying guns across state lines was about 5 years ago. Perhaps stuff has changed since then, but I believe my information is still accurate.

Good Luck! Keep the IL waiting period in mind!!

EDIT:

I checked out the ATF website...here is their exact wording on buying firearms across state lines:

"A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee's premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes."
