Why do so many drunks think if they drink vodka no one can smell it or tell that they are always smashed?

I've never heard anybody make the same claim for any other form of alcohol, but several (in fact, all) of the hard core alkies I know, poor souls, mistakenly think that by consuming vodka they are somehow concealing their problem.

Hard core alkies drink vodka cause its cheap. The cheapest. So I wouldnt say its the vodka per se but just the fact that vodka is more commonly drank among alkies.
Needless to say they are drunk and/or suffer from permament brain damage from drinking so much and so they are generally pretty stupid.

Vodka has very little smell, and you can mix it in any thinig and people would never know you had it in there, unless they have been an alcoholic themselves. But the only reason people does this is because they probably have a drinking problem, either in the early stages, or even late stages. Us alkies are good for slipping into denial, it is something we have to work on every day in order to not take that next drink.

That's basically an old myth. Vodka is highly distilled, and doesn't have the flavorings that a lot of other alcoholic beverages do. It can be masked by mixers, and does not change their smell or flavor. But that does not mean that by itself it's totally odorless! Pure, grain alcohol does have a distinct smell, and masking it with mixers isn't going to hide that. But myths die hard, and the alcoholics need some sort of a coverup for what they do. People who sneak a cigarette now and then think nobody knows, too. Yet any non-smoker around them can smell what they've been up to. These people are only fooling themselves.

Because the alcohol has obviously damaged their brain. I've heard the same thing about people who drink gin, which is very close to vodka -- they think it doesn't have a smell (wrong) so no one will know if they drink it (wrong again).

Vodka, in the bottle, has a very faint smell, so they figure that no one will know/smell the alcohol. It's also fairly cheap to buy.

Everyone knows that everclear is the best alcohol to get smashed with and not have it smell (if you live).

Alcoholics are always in denial that others can tell they've been drinking. They realize when they hit rock bottom what they do to themselves and hopefully seek help.
