I just worked out after eating a big meal. I'm wondering if this is a good time to work out.

If you can stomach it (pun intended) then go right ahead. I can't eat a lot when exercising or my stomach cramps up from not getting enough blood.

When you eat, your blood goes to your stomach and intestines to absorb the nutrients you just took in. This means that your blood is not available for powering your muscles. As a cyclist, I have to balance my workload carefully with my food intake on long rides or something cramps, which is miserable.

You would probably get a better workout if you waited at least an hour before exercising.

Eating a lot before exercise can slow you down.

When you exercise after a large meal, you may feel sluggish or have an upset stomach, cramping and diarrhea. That's because your muscles and your digestive system are competing with each other for energy resources

On the flip side, not eating before you exercise can be just as bad as eating too much. Low blood sugar levels that result from not eating can make you feel weak, faint or tired, and your mental abilities may be affected as well, making you slower to react. So what can you do?

To get the most from your workout, follow these guidelines:

Eat a full breakfast.

Time your meals. Eat large meals at least three to four hours before exercising. If you're having a small meal, eat two to three hours before exercising.

Don't skip meals. Skipping meals may cause low blood sugar, which can make you feel weak and lightheaded.

Eat after your workout. To help your muscles recover and to replace their glycogen stores, eat a meal that contains both protein and carbohydrates within two hours of your exercise session if possible.

Lots of blood flow is shunted to the digestive organs after eating. Sending more to the skeletal muscles could deprive the brain, causing dizziness or an accident.

A walk after eating, though, can help settle a large meal, and burns off some calories just as the are being absorbed.

I'd say no..unless you want a stomach cramp.

Better to wait 30-60 minutes.
