I learned in a college biology class that the reason their hair has a coarse texture is because it is acutally not straight, but each strand is actually a very, very, very tight spiral curl. Maybe this is it. I say this because you know how some people that have tight banana curls are said to have "kinky curly" hair. In summary, I think it just means a tight curl.

A "kink" is a bend in a thread, hose, string, yarn, etc. that causes the item to close in on itself. Black peoples hair being naturally tight and curly often "kinks" when grown long and not treated to do other wise. Technically the same thing can hapen to any race of people but it happens quickly and easily to people of African and Mediterranian descent.
