I don't know what H&R Block charges but the people there are not really tax experts they are just interviewing you and putting your info into a tax program similar to turbo tax. So, if you just bought turbo tax and did it yourself then your taxes will probably be done just as well. I am an accountant (financial statement auditor specifically) and would just use Turbo Tax myself. It costs about $40. Keep in mind that all tax preparation expenses are deductible.

As a rule to be able to tell an actual knowledgable, experineced tax expert they should be able to sit down with all your forms and blank copies of the tax forms and a pencil and complete your taxes in about 20 minutes without any computerized help and without researching anything etc.

You can either do it yourself and have them look at it or have them do everything. They have a basic charge and if you have extra forms to fill, they charge you separately. I have very complicated returns and have been handing everything over to them since 3 years ago. I think they are comparable to any tax preparer. Considering the time you save and headache, it's worth the money.

It depends on how complex your return is - they charge depending on what forms have to be filled out. For fairly straightforward returns, federal and state, I've seen people with charges of $100 or a little more.
