My state (Illinois) does not have a conceal-carry gun permit program, would it therefore be legal to do so with a knife? (I walk daily through an area where people have been killed during muggings.)

Don't ask, just do it. If people couldn't carry knives, you'd have thousands of farm kids in jail.

I was told by an officer that it is not considered a concealed weapon if it is clipped onto your pocket or in a sleeve on your belt but if it is just being carried completely in your pocket, then yes, you are in violation of the conceal carry statute.

depends on the size. many states limit the knife you can carry to a 6 inch blade or under. check your local laws first.

YOU CAN CARRY A BUCK FOLDER OR THE LIKE JUST NOTHING OVER A 5 1/2 INCH BLADE WITH NO DOUBLE EDGE BUT IF STOPPED TELL THEM IMMEDIATELY YOU HAVE ONE AND LET THEM TAKE IT OUT.

I'm not an expert but I would assume there is a state regulation on the maximum allowed length...

I think IL is a 4 inch blade max. I know MO is 6 in max.
