Yes. You employer probably had you fill out a W-4 form when you were hired. This form reports to the various levels of government (local, state, and Federal) that you are indeed earning an income, and they will deduct your taxes from that income. When you filled out that form, you can choose how many dependents you have, in your case you can claim yourself and your child.

If you don't recall filling out the form, or need to change anything on it, all you have to do is talk to your employer.

If you have questions concerning you income taxes, you should go to a reputable tax-filing company. H&R Block is well known, as is Jackson-Hewitt. Sometimes you bank will offer help.

Also, another good source of assistance is your State government. Many times they offer free tax assistance and advice.

You will probably get some tax advantage because of the child, but it depends on your income and filing status among other things.

If the child is your dependent, you'd get an exemption for the child and a tax credit. If you would otherwise owe any taxes, this would reduce or eliminate them.

The child might also make you eligible for an Earned Income Credit. If your income is higher than a certain amount (around $32,000 to $34000 depending on filing status), then you would not get this. Also, if your status is married filing separately, you would not get it. Otherwise you probably will, even if you don't owe any taxes.
