I am the mother of 4 year old twins. One of which has speech apraxia. She also has motor apraxia which affects her overall body movement. She has been in speech therapy for a year now and is currently attending preschool. She can finally put 2 sometimes 3 words together to make a sentence. But she still does not put the ending on her words. Dog would be da. House is How. water is wa, etc. It is a neurological problem. For us to speak the brain has to send the signal to our mouth basically. In the case of apraxia children that signal is delayed and they cannot speak plain. I will list a couple of links the first being a talking page. It features apraxia children of different ages and what they sound like. You can listen and get a really good idea that with lots of love, support and therapy that our children will talk. Every child deserves a voice. Advocate for your child and make sure the school he goes to understands his condition and NEVER take NO for an answer. We have to speak for them.

The cause or causes of DAS are not yet known. Some scientists believe that DAS is a disorder related to a child's overall language development. Others believe it is a neurological disorder that affects the brain's ability to send the proper signals to move the muscles involved in speech. However, brain imaging and other studies have not found evidence of specific brain lesions or differences in brain structure in children with DAS. Children with DAS often have family members who have a history of communication disorders or learning disabilities. This observation and recent research findings suggest that genetic factors may play a role in the disorder.
