In Chinese, each syllable can have 4 different sounds.
Xiao generally means "small". For Xiao say 'sh' ( like be quiet) and then instantly say 'ow' (like hurt) with out any pause to form one syllable. You can hear it hear in the first sound of the group. http://www.wku.edu/~yuanh/AudioChinese/AuChSnd/shaobing.mp3 or http://www.wku.edu/~yuanh/Chinese101/audio/pinyinspelling/x/xiao.mp3
For the second word, I think you may have it wrong. Gou is usually the word "dog"( http://www.wku.edu/~yuanh/Chinese101/audio/pinyinspelling/g/gou.mp3 ). You might want to be thinking of "guo". If that is the case then this is how it sounds: http://www.wku.edu/~yuanh/Chinese101/audio/pinyinspelling/g/guo.mp3 .
