I've been to churches where 5 collection baskets were passed around (I was forced to attend Christian church as a kid).

Why do you need money in such excess to worship God?

This is the one major thing all churches in any religion do that bothers me, although I do understand why we give money to the church.

In the Bible it tells of the sacrificial lambs given in honor of God. At some points in time if one did not have a lamb to offer shekels, silver or actual human sacrifices were made instead. In the time that the books of the Bible were written this is what people did to honor their God and show their complete faith and trust in Him.

Now, times have changed, yet, there is still good reason for The Offering Plate. The church needs money to pay the electric bills, heating costs and supplies, including a few church staff wages, especially the Pastor. Fact remains that even faith and believing in God we are still human and still need currency to continue to exist and progress.

The thing I have the most issue with is the lovely excel spreadsheet that gets sent out a few times a year showing you what you NEED to be contributing percentage wise each week, depending on where your yearly gross income falls. I don't believe this is necessary, but, most of the older generations that I know still fully believe in this method of Offerings to their church.

I don't have to–I want to. Churches need money to keep the building maintained, heated or cooled, supplied with water, connected by phone and or Internet, and the people who work in the church need to be paid as well. Just because it's a church doesn't mean there is some cosmic cash machine keeping it going. However, monetary offerings also allow the church to help in community charities, host after school programs, and other organizations that need a place to be or meet. Money also allows churches to send people to different places to help out, like after a natural disaster. You don't have to give money. You should give it because you want to help support the church and its mission.

I don't know why any church would have 5 offerings.

How else can the church pay their bills and the preachers salary? They have to have money. One or two offering during service is not a big deal. If don't want to give, then don't. It's not doing you any good or pleasing God if you give it grudgingly.

This is why I love Jehovahs Witnesses. You will NEVER see a collection plate of any kind being passed around. NO minister/preacher there is paid for their services...everything is done on a volunteer basis, even donations. They have a contribution box hanging on the wall but again its a thing done out of LOVE and WANT. You do not have to give a single dime to anyone! Check it out

there in no "requirement", in any church I have ever been in, for any one to put money in the plate.... It is a free offering... but every one, except you I guess, understands that the building must be maintained. Even with voluteer help it still costs money... and there is the work for the poor to maintian... and clothing for those who just lost every thing in a fire. and a plane ticket for the woman who needs to be with her dying son... many many many things are done with the little that is "put in the plate'

You do not have to give them money, it's optional. It's a donation.

Because it's an illegal tax. It's "fear tax". If you don't give money, you go to hell and burn.

I don't remember who said that, but it was really funny.
