1.Balloons are spherical in shape and are lifted up by hot air from the burner situated in the passenger basket and underneath an opening in the lower part of the balloon. .To come down the air in the balloon is just allowed to cool .It works on the principle that hot air is less dense(lighter) than cold air so it rises up.
There is no horizontal and side control and it is just carried by air currents and wind.Properly equipped people has used it for long journeys including around the world.
Very good to have a bird's eye view of a landscape when there is no strong wind

2.Airships are fusiform in shape (more aerodynamic) and is filled with a light gas. Hydrogen was used in the pre-Hindenberg era; thereafter inert gas Helium was used. Its lift depends upon the principlle that something with a lower density will float in a fluid( Air in this instance) of higher density. The Greek philosopher Archimedes first described that.
There is a closed glass pannelled passenger cabin below the airship which, in the 30's, appeared as a five star restaurant.
Little propellers on the sides and at the back helped for its forward and side movements control. These helped to do transatlantic runs.
Nowadays we see them being used for TV cameras at football matches and for advertising!

Balloons refer to the starndard hot air balloon which is acutally shaped like a balloon, and flys using propane burning to create life (hot air rises)...airships are hellium filled balloons that look like a hot air balloon on their side. Airships include the Hindenburg and classic german zeplins.

Hi,
What about them ?
What is the Q ?
I live near Cardington airship feild, and the glorious things float above most days when it is not too windy.
Been on both the varieties, and great fun by all.
Not the speediest method of travel, and downright dodgy.
However, I recommend both to all.
Better than a fast 'plane every time.
Happy sailing around.
Bob.
