is this possible or shall the father/son go in their own life?

This is a rather vague question, but a reconciliation is always possible if both parties are willing to forgive and compromise. Communicating in a open and honest way will help to resolve any issues and miscommunications. The bond between a father and a son is very important and life is too short to have animosity and hate-especially towards family.

A father can make things right with his son by accepting his son for who he is. If the father has not been in the son's life when the son was growing up the father needs to recognize that he can't go back and make up for that lost time, you will never get that time back but you can move forward. You can still have many years left with your son, good years. Don't make excuses, just listen, love, and be available.

It depends what the dad did to mess up and how bad he wants to fix things. The son also has to be willing to forgive. If the son won't forgive then how can the father try to fix things.

Well, like I said before. It really depends on what the dad has done. Hey, why doesn't the dad and the son sit down and talk about the problem at hand then try to resolve it.

Remember, the problem has to be acknowledge in its fulliest before any resolution can be made.

Hope everything turns out okay :)

By showing that he cares, even remotely.

My father failed to do this, I haven't spoken with him since the age of 17 (I am 28 now).

It depends on what separated them in the first place. There should always be room for forgiveness and a second chance.

To begin with, the father must be emotionally healthy. There are people who are too sick to make improvements in their families and they must be left alone.

Ask for forgiveness for whatever you did and stop doing it after that. You can slowly mend the relationship after that.
