You should visit the website of the US Embassy in your country to check what the procedure is. Here in Korea it was quite simple for us to get married (it was actually a matter of signing papers, we did have a ceremony but 6 months after the fact). Once you get that done there are essentially two parts to the visa process and they take 4-6 months.
1st part I-130 form (both of you fill it out), submit proof of marriage, passports for both of you, divorce decree (if either of you have been married before) and pay a fee of $185.
2nd part is more complex and usually requires a medical exam, quite a few more forms, a police certificate (saying you have no arrests), vaccination report (which you can have a doctor talk to you about what shots you might need), and an affidavit of support proving she earns enough to support you. The fee for the second round is quite a bit steeper at $380.
There is no way to speed up the process, so the best hope is (if your going to get married) to start the process right away.
I tend to agree, if your short on time, you may be better off trying for a fiancee visa (which may be a longer route) which will give you more time to get the paperwork in order.

As you say marriage is a big step for you, so take your time..don't just do it for a visa!
What are your living arrangements at the minute...have you lived with her for a long period of time, as this is where some marriages go wrong, they haven't actually lived with their partner until they get married! Especially as you'll be moving with her to her 'territory' where all her friends & family will be and you will have no-one except her! (im presuming, this may not be the case!)
You said you want to do it properly? surely if you guys are madly in love it cant wait so you can do it properly?
For better advice than any of us can give you, give citizens advice a ring, i had a friend that recently moved to southern america and they sent her an information back through detailing everything about visa's/green cards/migration etc she was in a similar situation to you as she was marrying a fella from the US!
good luck! hope it works out perfectly for you!

It would be easier and quicker for her to apply for a fiance visa for you instead of getting married and then applying for a spousal visa. It usually takes around 6 months for the fiance visa to be approved, but up to a year for the marriage visa.

It's actually pretty easy to get a spouse visa. It just takes time. You'll need to make sure you get a marriage that will be recognized by US Homeland Security.
Guys, the chick is the US citizen here!!!
