I know that many children go through a short phase of toe walking-but if they continue to do it, it can be a sign of a developmental problem.-------

"Most children walk on their toes occasionally when they're cruising, especially on bare floors. Some do it just for fun. But your child shouldn't toe-walk the majority of the time. If you notice that your child walks on his toes all the time, he may have a physical problem (such as a short Achilles tendon) that's preventing him from putting his feet flat on the floor. It could also be a sign of a more serious motor disorder, such as mild cerebral palsy."

Because your toes play a major role in keeping your balance. Babys just learning how to walk will do this for quite a while until they're comfortable with using the rest of their feet. :)

Keep an eye on this habit. My duaghter still does this sometimes(almost three) and the doc told me that if she doesn't stop, it can be harmful. (I also had a friend that had to undergo some sord of leg surgery when she was a child because she did this for too long)
Most children learning to walk will do this, but try to encourage your child to walk flat on his feet as often as you notice.

its a futile attempt to gain initial balance and strengthen muscles they have not yet used. Though for the most part, they need to leave this phase relatively quickly if they wish to walk normally in relatively quick amount of time.
Babies that continue to use their tiptoes to walk often times develop problems walking as they progress through their milestones.

Because their balance falls on the tip toes .. they dn't have enough balance on their structure to let them walk like us adults

I think it feels more secure for them. I love it when they do that. Once they get the hang of it, they seem to walk more normal. I know my daughter does it all the time.
