My Mum passed away just before Christmas, and I lived with her in her council flat in Manchester, I am not on the rent book and did not have joint tenantcy. Somebody has told me I take on the tenantcy as I am next of kin and need to sort it out with the council. I would really like to stayasI am still grieving and would like to live here, at least untill im ready to move on.

i am so sorry to hear of your loss.iam sure if you take the death cetificate to the council and to the nessceray departments they will try to help, however if you are unsure i would recomend that you make an appointment with your local C,A,B Citizans advice bureau and they will point you in the right way

Contact the council asap and inform them on the situation. I'm not sure if the rules have changed since my father passed away but they will even offer you the option of taking over the tenancy and staying in the flat.

you will have to speak to the Council to take the tenancy over, they are in their rights to put the rent up for you though as you will be classed as a new tenant. also if the Council has a waiting list for new tenants and you are not on that list you may find yourself out of the flat so someone else can move in

I'm sorry for your loss. As soon as you feel able you must contact your local council housing department. I know this is a difficult time so if you don't feel up to it either ask a relative to talk to them on your behalf, or the local citizens advice bureau. Sooner is better than later.

usually you have to be a joint tenant. but as long as you are over 18 and have lived there more than a year i think you can apply to take over the tenancy as long as it hasnt already been passed on. (as in from someone else to your mum) contact the council asap. good luck

You will need to inform the Council whatever you decide to do, so maybe sooner is better and they can then give you all the alternatives, this will help in making up your mind. Good Luck.

i work in the housing dept for the council (not in your area though) but.... it depends on how long you have lived there, what your plans were when you moved in with her.. did you pay any bills... have you a family suffice for the size property... you need to get in touch with your local council office asap else they will serve you notice to vacate.

need any more help just ask. x

I'm so sorry for your loss, talk to the council, they should at least give you time to grieve, if they want you to move out,
