I'm 22 years old, and i've been aware of this problem since I was about 13. I've never drempt of my wedding day like most little girls- I've always drempt about the day when my jaw would be corrected. It's not a minor proplem, it's pretty dramatic, and well noticeable...SOOO I'm excited to be getting it done in a few months, but would love some input from people who have had it or seen it done..What happens when you leave the opp. room? I hear its well worth it, and i'm prepared for the worst. Please just support guys :)

I have seen this surgery. Keep your head up. Its worth it.
The whole surgery thing is comparable to, running a marathon. You will be tire and exausted. Recovery will take good care of you.
Drawbacks of surgery:
Discomfort for first two weeks.
Wont be able to eat solid foods for at least 6weeks. Basically a baby food diet.
Wont be able to talk very well, but if you work at it, you will get use to that.
It is definately worth it for a someone in your position.
After the 6 weeks are up, as long as you are healing ok, no infections. Then they will probably take wires off and put heavy elastis on too rebuild/retrain your jaw muscules. Hope this helps take care.

I have had TMJ for 8 yrs (and I am only 23 yrs old)... and have had corrective surgery. My bone was cut and lowered. I am wired shut, so I am on a liquid diet. You will be swollen, and in some intense pain. When you get to the hospital, you get to wear the backless gown and a robe and foam slippers. Then they take you to the "pre-op" room where they start your IV and get your hair covered, and get a sedative to ease you a little. Then they wheel you in for the operation. You are then put in the recovery room till you are awake, and are comfortable (they give you morphine). Then after about an hour or so (depends on you), you are taken to another room until you are fully awake, and they discharge you. When I had my bone graft I was in for about 5 hrs. But my jaw surgery was over night.
You will probably get Tylenol 3's for pain. I am allergic to it, but 2 extra strengh tylenol (DO NOT TAKE ADVIL) did just a good a job. Of course I had to crush it. And you may get Amoxicillin. If you have to break them, and just take the powder.... its best if you mix it with apple sauce... or ice cream.
I get my wires cut this friday, but I don't think there is anything to worry about. I don't know how well the procedure went, but even now I am glad I got it done.
PS: Buy Boost. It really helped me out. You can get fiber ones, and extra calories, and extra protien to help heal the bones. You will loose some weight on a soft food diet, so be prepared to keep your nutrition up with Boost or something of the sort.

My daughter had jaw surgery and for the first few days you will not be able to open your mouth very wide to get a spoon in. You will not be permitted to suck from a straw. So eating will be fairly difficult but this website's products made a huge difference for my child.
http://www.zip-n-squeeze.com/ These are the coolest things. You put your drinks or soups into these bags and close them with the zipper and a clamp. You place the soft plastic straw along side your cheek to the back of your mouth and squeeze the bag and the drinks or soups just go into your mouth and you swallow.
My daughter said she would do this surgery in a heart beat as it was very worth it.

I had jaw surgery in the summer of my sophmore year in high school. It wasn't double jaw surgery but it was jaw surgery. I had been going to the orthodontist since I was 12...had braces for 3 years, 4 teeth permanent teeth pulled. I had my lower jaw broken and moved forward and set in place with 4 screws, plus I had my chin broken and moved forward (they said it didn't support my face) and I had my two top wisdom teeth out. All in an outpaitent doctors office!! I bled out of my mouth for 2 days straight and was in serious pain....slept alot. I was swollen for 2 weeks...couldn't close my mouth for about 4 days. Be prepared for pain and a swollen mouth. I also couldn't chew solid foods for 6 weeks by doctors orders, so eat light food. Even with all I went through I am glad I did it. Don't be scared, be informed. Go in with a winning attitude and know that it will turn out in the end. Good luck!

Dental and Jaw Surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Forerunners Healthcare. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.
They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
