This form of Christianity is fostering an archaic world view that includes a literal interpretation of Genesis. Over 50% of the US population believe that the earth is around 6000 years old. Is this damaging the US, economically, ecologically or perhaps in terms of security? any thoughts?

Blaize, what a post, you really made me laugh. Let me get this straight, because it has been interpreted (differently) from a really old book you believe it. Science is rapidly developing more and more sophisticated technology and theories and are gradually improving on an extremely difficult figure to measure, so you think that they are just plain wrong. Priceless!

Dumbing down America, making every attempt to impose christian fundamentalist law on our citizens, deny equal rights for gays, eliminate abortion, teach creationism in public schools, advocated public prayer. And more.

I despise them.

The bible does not necesarily say how old the earth is. It talks about the different days of creation. These days are the preparation of the earth for humans to inhabit it. The earth could well have been around for millions of years before the days of creation began. By the way, the earth is not 6000 years old, as even if 1000 years is 1 day for god, then 6 days of creation is 6,000 years, and at least another 2,000, because it is the year 2,007, so lets figure as a minimum 8,000 years. I know this doesn't have much to do with evangelism, just wanted to talk about how if 50% of the population believes that, its a pretty large amount....

Yes it is. Because more people are becoming Christians we will be bombed more often. More murders will occur, because everyone knows commandment #11 Thou shalt kill non christians. Oha nd Commandment #12 Thou shalt not buy anything so that thy economy shall fail miserably. Oh and everyone loves commandment #13 Later I will tell you about evangalism and you should do it because that means believing the earth is 6000 years old.

Oh and there is more proof leading to the earth being 6000 years old than to it being 14 milion 12 million 10 million or naything else.

1st off scientist have changed how old the earth is 20 times in the last 20 years. Wow very consistant there the Bible has always said 6000

2nd off By just reading the geneology of the Bible 6000 years are added up.
Adam and Eve created
2000 years
Noah's Ark
2000 years
Jesus
2000 years
now

True, the fundamentalists want the Bible to be taken as absolute truth and cast doubt on modern scientific discoveries, which would cause 'dumbing down' of American citizens. Its something to worry about when 50% believe that the Earth is only 6000 years old. On the other hand, there's quite a few people on the opposite end of the political spectrum that are doing their share in the 'dumbing down of America'. Look at and listen to the, ah, 'stuff' that we Americans accept as entertainment.

Unless secular society here in America puts a stop to it... it will be the end of this country. We won't be a superpower much longer, that's for sure.

We are already despised by the majority of the world. If we allow this theocracy to continue its insane policies, there WILL be an uprising against us. Some might say that uprising has already begun, actually.

I find evangelism scary. Although I disagree with abortion in some cases it may be the right thing. There are some people who don't even know what an atheist is they are so indoctrinated that scares me.

Impact?YES but at an alarmingly very slow pace because parents that claim to be xtians dont talk to there kids about God.You know the kids are the future and they need to take a stand very early in life.so when parents that should lead by example dont care, what do you expect?

If its true that 50% of the US population believes that the word is 6000 years old. Then 50% of the US population is mentally sick!

I dont believe those numbers, they cant be _that_ stupid.

It's an embarassment. Other countries are looking at these nutters with their mindset that belongs in the middle ages and asking what the hell is going on in America.

Yeah, it is making the average American really, really dumb.

Did you know that under the Bush administration, guides at the Grand Canyon National Park are not allowed to mention how old the canyon is.
