The most important thing is to have a passion for cooking and a passion for making pastry. If you have that fire then the study is easy, if not, then it will be a grind like anything else. You can either go to a good culinary school or get a job in a good kitchen learn from the pros there. Either way you'll need to work very hard and be serious about what you are doing or you'll fail at it. The hours are generally long, the work is hard physically (lots of heavy lifting and long hours of standing), and the pay, especially in the beginning, is low except for the very best. That's why you must have a passion to be a chef, pastry or otherwise.

I know a pastry chef, on his job for 5 years, doesn't get paid that well but has a lot of job satisfaction.
