My cat was in a fight about a month ago. Today he scratched open a scab, and it smelled like cat poop. There was bloody puss every where, and I had to give him a bath. He is still draining and it stinks, is there anything I can do?

Hi Kelsiemae...your cat has an abscess which most likely was a result of a bite or scratch wound commonly seen in outdoor cat fights. The odour you smell is from the infected puss from the wound site. An abscess needs to be drained and cleaned ONLY with soap and water please NOT hydrogen peroxide which pushes the bacteria back down into the infected wound. Ideally, a vet should do this to minimize scarring and further infection. Cats can develop a fever as a result of the infection therefore it would be best to ring a vet and have your cat evaluated to treat respectively. Some cats require a short course of prescribed antibiotic.

Your first option is to make sure the wound is cleaned out. Your cat will hate you, but you need to be putting either alcohol or hydrogen peroxide in it to help keep it clean. Also, try to keep your cat from scratching or 'cleaning' it.

If you think it is bad enough, take your cat to the vet. In fact, I'd suggest it. There may be more wounds that are in this situation, and your cat may have even picked up a disease. Your vet is the one who knows best about what to do.

Try putting on some bacitracin or neosporin ointment on it but not the kind that has lidocaine for pain in it. That should help alot. Also try cleaning it out with a little hydrogen peroxide before putting ointment on it.

sounds as sif kitty has an infection. i tis very difficult to treat kitties without help--and infections untreated can get very dangerous to kitty. call your vet and see what he recommends--he knows kitty and kitty's habits and will be able to help treat the wounds, if the wounds are large and need treatment to reduce infection.

It has an infection, take it to the Vet so you can get some anti-biotics for it so it can heal.

Take him to the vet. He has an infection and it can spread and possibly kill him if it's not treated!
