It's depends your budget. If you are very rich and you want to live in a typical french place buy a flat on "l'ile saint louis". It is the oldest district of Paris with very beautiful flats. Also you can buy in "le marais". It is the gay district, but flat are also very nice and the area is very animated
The 17th district close to Place des Ternes is very nice. Close to Champs Elysees, with lot of restaurants, shops...and huge flat.
Also the district of Saint Germain is good.

I lived in the 5th arrondisement and liked it. Could walk to the Place de la Bastille in 5-10 minutes. Latin Quarter was in the next neighborhood. Could walk to the Louvre, Notre Dame. But I wasn't close enough to the Eiffel Tower and all that,so no dealing with tons of tourists.

If money is not a problem for you, I'd say facing the Seine river, and the Louvres. Otherwise give your budget range, and I might be able to guide you better!
