Was told by a counselor one time that I had built walls around myself after so many years of heartache...family, marriage...and that should let a few cracks begin to let the good come in....easier said than done. How is it done?

I suppose my walls are the ways I defend, protect, places I feel I'm vulnerable. For me, allowing a crack would involve trust. Perhaps trusting myself to act appropriately in a new situation or trusting that I could share a truth of mine with another person.
But really, the development of trust has not as much to do with circumstance or others as it has to do with trusting yourself to choose and to choose well and, most importantly, to be able to handle the consequence however it may go.
In this sense you build trust by running the risk of reaching out. You place yourself, incrementally , at risk of being hurt or being disappointed or failing. Then you gather information, your trust that you will take care of yourself builds. A crack in your self made wall. Go slow, take a class, invite a peer you admire to lunch. Begin where you feel some bit of fear but, you do'nt have to risk 'all or none'. Be kind to yourself.

I think he/she is referring to the fact that you crowd yourself with too many worries? It sounds too vague, almost so much that it sounds like the counselor is running out of good advice lol. I think you should look at more of the positive in life rather than all the troubles...

like you said, WAY easier said than done.
