I don't know ANYTHING about any of this stuff. My Mom doesn't know either. Should we invite close friends, people who will be in the bridal party along with the fam? Just dinner somewhere or at home?

Like was said before hand, you can throw any kind you want. But yes your friends would be invited. If you have already picked out your bridal party, the rule is the bridal party is invited (though they do NOT have to come to every event despite what The Knot says) to every event--engagement parties, showers, bachelorette parties.

If you are having a small wedding/reception, its not polite to invite people to an engagement party/shower if they arent invited to the wedding. This topic comes up all the time--brides saying they can't afford to feed them all but want to share the good news/rack up on gifts. Sorry. You don't invite them to the wedding--you don't invite them to a gift giving event.

You both should check out The Everything Wedding Book. It has a great planning section and answers a lot of questions. But before I started planning this party I'd sit down and work on the budget. Cause at this party everyone is going to be asking you what you've decided--when's the date, who's going to be MOH, are you having an evening wedding--tons of questions. I'd make sure I have some answers first!

You can have any type of engagement party that you want to. You can invite a few friends and family out to dinner or you can have a big party and invite lots of people. There is no right or wrong way. Whatever is going to make it special for you. Good luck!

Whatever you want to do would be perfect for your engagement party! There are no clear cut qualifications.

I would definitely invite those people who are going to be in the wedding party, along with close family.

Whatever you want, or she can afford...having friends is always nice...if you think of it the more people the more gifts.

Where ever you want, again it is all up to you...there is no right of wrong way to have a party.

I didn't even have an engagement party. Word just spread by mouth and me showing off my ring. (smile)
