I am going to be flying to Disney World with my 5 year old son and 3 year old daughter all by myself and have never flown in a commercial aircraft before.

Are there any tips and tricks that I need to keep in mind when traveling with them?

Bring their car-seats onboard the plane. It is a much safer way to fly for little ones; airlines do not require it (although your kids are old enough that they do require their own seats) but the seatbelts in planes don't properly restrain kids.

Flying with Kids > Travel tips

Check that your airline allows you to pre-book baby bassinet (sky cot) before the day of travel - not all will - Air NZ only allows pre-booking for infants of 8 months and less, otherwise you must wait until check-in to see if a bassinet is available.

Take a set of reins or a harness for a toddler so that you can let him walk around the terminal - but still keep him close at hand. This is a great bonus as you try to pick luggage from the carousel or present documents to airline, customs and immigration officials.

Pack a small bag with just one diaper, a few wipes, a perfumed nappy sack and some rash cream if needed and place it in the seat pocket in front of you.

Wrap toys to add to their entertainment value.

Snap on wheels for infant car seats (you can hire these from Plunket in New Zealand) are a real bonus if you've booked a seat for your infant and he'll be riding in his car seat. They can be taken onto the plane but take the assembly apart before check in to reduce the appearance of bulk. You'll love the convenience of wheels as you move around the airport.

The safest way for baby to fly is in an approved car seat used as a flight seat or using a CARES flight harness. Check the base of your infant or toddler car seat to look for the FAA approved sticker --- if you can't find one, check the manufacturer's instructions or contact the manufacturer to find out if the seat is approved for use in airplanes.

bring lots of entertainment such as these:
-Laptop to watch movies
-crayons
-paper, coloringbook
-snacks
-travel games
-Gameboy
-therapy pillows
-stuffed animals
A book, a crossword, nitendo ds, psp, gameboy whatever it is get them something new and don't give it to them until your on the plane. That way it's new and more entertaining. I'm not sure what kids are reading these days, but maybe the new harry potter or a Shel Silverstein book of short poems Where the sidewalk ends or A light in the attic are always a hit (read it to them). Have fun on your trip!
Also, always hold hands with them, so th dont break loose. Thats the last place ull want to loose them! Also, FL is very hot and bring xtra sunblock, and aloe vera. Last year, i took my 4 yr old son there, and he couldnt walk it! Bring a stroller, and a backpack w/ snacks
