By my estimates I arfrived at 27 years.
The total U.S. population crossed the 100 million mark around 1915, the 200 million mark in 1967, and the 300 million mark in 2006. [2] The U.S. population more than tripled during the 20th century - a growth rate of about 1.3 percent a year - from about 76 million in 1900 to 281 million in 2000.

Now some simple math,
in1915 100million.
in 1967 200million
in 2006 300million
That took a span of 100 years to triple, but the unique factor is the 1967-2007 figure, span of 50 years, more people haveing more babies, it doubled.

Toady with 300m and useing those statistics, it should take no more than 27 years to double agaiin.
That is just the US,
These numbers show that the world's population has tripled in 72 years, and doubled in 38 years up to the year 1999. Including some more estimates, the world population has been doubled or will double in the following years (with two different starting points). Note how, during the 2nd millennium, each doubling has taken roughly half as long as the previous doubling.
Population 250 million 500 million 1 billion 2 billion 4 billion 8 billion
Year AD 950 1600 1802 1928 1974 2028
Years till next doubling 650 202 126 46 51
Population 375 million 750 million 1.5 billion 3 billion 6 billion
Year 1420 1720 1875 1961 1999
Years till next doubling 300 155 86 38
Thats the World.

When the next world double occurs, that is twice as many mouths to feed, twice as many wars, twice as many taxi cabs, twice as many houses needed, twice as much water needed, hey folks, we have a hard time now figureing this stuff out, in a few years we have to refigure everything. I dont have any brilliant plan to solve this when it occurs, but it will occur. And after a time there will be no borders left because the people will settle wherever thay can that is not poluted or on either Pole.
1/2 are Democratic Republics and 1/2 are Islamic Republics, we better learn how to get along or its gonnabe a mess.

Hmmm...let's see. Currently, we have a rough population of 320 or so million people in this country. Because we a more developed nation, we will increase in population very slowly. (For instance, look at the flip side and consider India or China. These are less developed countries, yet have a population of 1 billion or so people.)

Some of the factors that contribute to our slower growth is technology. We have the knowledge and the means to give us, for example, contraceptive technology and we also know how babies are conceived.

Also, I believe we understand that a bigger family doesn't necessarily mean a bigger work force. For instance, the Hispanics have large families, but that just means more mouths to feed and provide for. (I don't want to sound racial or anything here).

Those are just a couple factors that lead to a slower population growth. However, on the other hand, we also have a pretty high migration influx. Not only from the South, but from other countries as well. With these different ones coming in, they do increase the population.

Bah. I don't think I answered your question on the dot, but I hope you enjoyed some of these facts. ^_^

When the relative growth rate (not the absolute growth rate) is constant, the quantity undergoes exponential growth (also known as geometric growth) and has a fixed doubling time which can be calculated directly from the growth rate. This time can be derived by dividing the natural logarithm of 2 by the exponent of growth, or approximated by dividing 70 by the percentage growth rate. For example, given the U.S.s net population growth of 0.9% in the year 2006, dividing 70 by 0.9 gives an approximate doubling time of 77.7 years.

considering the development of the society...it won't happen. physically each "new" generation is much weaker than the previous "old" generation. it means their reproduction will be decreasing, due to their shrinking physical abilities.also the fact, that family is not a necessity. more and more people are deciding to have a carrier, and after, maybe children. from those who will decide to have, those after Carieer children, half will not be able to produce a healthy child, or a child at all. So within 15 to 20 years the population will shrink, around 50% of population will be oveer 60.
Those jerks who needs to make jokes on the immigrants... well those wich are illegals, are not counted as population of US. And those legals are much less then you believe them to be. And their children won't save your country from dying out.

I do know that for the world population to triple it would take 12 years, and 10 month or 12.84 years. To double it would take 8.2426 Yrs. How long would it take our population to decrease to one-half? It will take approx. 20 years and 4 months, or 20.345 years. However, The population will never decrease as long as the same growth behavior continues... Pretty astonishing huh? A professor I once knew did a huge caculation of it! It took up the whole chalk board to come up with it! It was really interesting to watch. I have never forgotten it either.. Hope this helped some. Take Care :)

Without immigration, or emmigration, the rate is double once every 35 years.

Nope not long, based on the trend of the 1990's (the largest growth decade in history) it will double in about 16.5 years but unlike the population explosion due to the baby boomers (50's and 60's), the native population growth in America has now stabilized to below replacement level. The growth now is fueled totally through the births of recent immigrants.

Scary but true and it's not going to change any time soon.

If it continues along the world's pace it would double in about 12-24 years give or take. however, the us population is not growing at that rate as far as legal population. if you start to add in illegal immigration into the equation, our birthrate increases to much closer to the world avg.
Though having an exact number would be impossible because of the unpredictability of world events (famine, plague, war), you would be safe to assume that within the next 2 to 4 decades that we would double once again.

In the last 50 year the Population of the US has almost doubled.

Given that, I'd estimate that unless some other event(s) prevent this growth it will continue, so I say about 50 years.
