Actually a combonation of both. The best way to stimulate a muscle is to work it with many diffrent exercises. Also, free range and free wieght movements beat machines any day. And, dont beleive the myth that if you do 300 crunches a day or every other day your abs will show. First of all diet is the most important factor in getting those abs. Second, abs are no diffrent than any other muscle doing 100 crunches a day will do nothing. What you need to do is work then 2-3 days a week. Pick three exercises one for upper abs, one for lower, and one for obliques. Then do 3 sets of 15-25 reps. Add some wieght to exercises like crunches if you have to. You can do crunches with a weight across your chest. And remember DIET, DIET, DIET!!! Good Luck

From my experience I think a combo of both will do the trick.

Using an ab machine helps lower the stress to your neck and back when working your abs. However many people tend to put in less effort b/c they think the machine will do the work for them instead of making sure they are using their ab muscles with every movement.

Doing good 'ol crunches and sit-ups are also very effective b/c you are using your own body weight and really working your abs to the fullest when done correctly. It has been said that the bicycle ab exercise is most effective b/c it utilizes all of your abdominal muscles including your obliques.

If I were you I would alternate so you don't get tired of doing the same thing.

Here's a site that can help you get that six pack you want.

I think a combination of using the Swiss ball and floor crunches is the best for working on your abs. I don't know much about ab machines, but i do know that the Swiss ball is the best for building and defining abs...it'll get your abs looking soooo right ...lol

Muscle is strengthened by contractions. Tighten your muscles and move slowly during the crunches. Form matters more than quantity. You have control when you do crunches instead of being molded by a gadget that was designed to be used by several body types and fitness levels. Do crunches for 6 weeks faithfully. If you don't like how it went, try the gadget...but I'd bet it'll collect dust in no time.

I got the best result from weighted crunches heavy enough that could only get 10 to 5 reps on each set. Most importantly, your abs won't show unless you get your body fat down to 10% or less.

I would say crunches beacsue you are not dependent on teh machine--and you can increase or decrease the number adn intensity on your own--easily--part of being a good workout is the ease with which you can continue it--so I think crunches would be easier to continue and modify

I have gotten better results in doing correct crunches then on a machine it is harder to cheat doing the crunches if you do them correctly but everyone is different

If you are trying to get better ab definition, neither. Lose weight by heavy cardio, less eating, and then do mild crunches for definition. Crunches will make your abs bigger but if you don't lose stomache fat you will just have a bigger belly.

it depends. to lose belly fat, you need aerobics. to build ab muscles, try slow crunches. raise up on a count of three, hold for a count of three, then lay back down on a count of three. this type of crunch seems to really have an effect. do however many of them you can stand!
I don't know about the ab machine.
