The Dalai Lama has a lot of great books on practicing Buddhism in modern times. Also there are many wonderful free articles at Buddhanet.net. Enjoy!

Buddhism for Dummies? Actually, I like the Dummies series, informative and not overly wordy. You might want to try there and work your way outwards with more informative books.
