Surgical instruments.

In order to remove a cataract a circular hole is first cut in the lens capsule. The inner nucleus of the lens is removed with a phacoemulsification machine (phaco - lens; emulsification - to liquify). This has a metal probe that vibrates at a high frequency in order break into tiny pieces (emulsify) the central nucleus and then aspirates (sucks) those pieces out of the eye.
