I know, it's a silly question that isn't really a huge issue or anything, but I've always wanted to know. Other popcorn is longer or more abstractly shaped. Why?

There are 2 types of popcorn: 'butterfly' and 'mushroom'. The odd-shaped ones are the butterfly type. The more round ones are the mushroom type.

Your more expensive popcorn is usually made with the mushroom type.

This is not as silly a question as you think and the answer probably not going to bring great things to the earths problems but it is a lot deeper and has more facets than first glance reveals.
Physics<> expansion of caramel and its molecular makeup restricting shape and even size of popped (how do we spell that and is it a word)corn?
Packaging<>How many ounces of corn mixed with caramel can one get in a container?
Is the word rounder accurate or is it smoother appearing?
Can we have a discussion of the Zen of Pop Corn?
Is it rounder? Yes it is!
Want to make it appear rounder?
Then look at it from various distances. Far enough away and it appears as just a round dot but to a mite or a bacterial entity attaching itself would find a not so smooth or round surface.
Explosive forces from within a vaccumn is circular, same as under water, equal resistance to force of explosion, but the kernal has an outer container that itself limits directional forces of its explosion, a shaped charge as used in construction or destruction, so while the directed force appears circular there remains portions pointing to directional forces of container.
All a lot of scientific BS but in yours and my anology yes it appears rounder, and from now on when I eat some I will remember your question.

Typically caramel corn is made by stirring/folding in the hot caramel into the popcorn while it is in a large round bottomed copper kettle. This tends to round the caramel corn as it is stirred and turned through the bottom of the kettle. It's warm and tends to form to it's container. A square bottommed container will eventually produce the same result with enough stirring but it is not as efficient nor as easy to coat the corn as a round bottomed kettle. ENJOY!

Well like when they pour the caramel over the popcorn it feels up the empty spaces and I guess when it dries into a hard form it like makes it look rounder...

Hope I Helped!

heres the real deal, in the production process for commercial caramel corn, the popped corn is rolling throught the process, as the caramel is added this thick gue coats the outside of the rolling corn, thus taking on a very ball like surface.

The caramel that is added to the popcorn fills in the nooks and crannies of the popped kernels, so each popped kernel begins to take a more rounded shape.

Because caramel is a covering for the corn, and it doesn't go on to the popcorn perfect, it gets distorted and sometimes "too much" is put on making it bigger.

Probably because the caramel fills in some of the edges of the popcorn.

probably because the thick carmel coating covers all the edges and fill in the holes making the popcorn look rounder.

Most popcorn is coated in a powdery coating. Carmel popcorn is coated in what basically amounts to a thick goo that dries and hardens. Therefore, carmel popcorn has a shell that makes it a little fatter and rounder than regular popcorn.
