Are you talking about the ticking noises after your engine is completely stopped? If so, that's just the metal in your engine resizing after cooling down, there is nothing wrong with that... Metal expands and gets smaller when it heats up and cools down, just like ice does... You hear noises like that when you're on a glacier, the ice rubs with other ice as it heats up and cools down.
If you freeze water, it expands, think of it the same way, except the metal doesn't break, what you're hearing is it sliding just a little bit against other metal parts while it cools down.
::
If that's not what you're talking about, and it really is like metal stuff bouncing around and kinda like the engine is still running, it could be getting extremely hot, like you have a radiator problem... When this occurs, there is still enough heat being made to keep the car running after you shut it off... It will sound like a deseil engine kinda for a few seconds after you shut it off.

What you are probably hearing is the cooling down of the heat shields that cover the catalytic converter and some exhaust components. Sometimes the welds break and these things can get very noisy (pops and cracks) as they cool down.

Generally, the temperature goes up while the engine is running, when it come to halt the hot metal part of the exhaust is starting to lower its temperature causing contraction of the metal part.

It is the metal parts of the engine coming to a halt. If it is overly noisy, you should get a tune-up.
After it has sat for a few minutes, you will hear the metal of the engine cooling down and contracting.

is it a pinging, popping sound? if that is what you are talking about it is the metal parts of your exhaust system cooling down. It is common on most internal combustion engines.

It's called, "Metal stuff bouncing around", doors opening and closing and springs decompressing from your weight leaving the car.

If it isn't 'tranny trash' then consider the possibility that you hear those external sounds you don't hear when the engine is running.
Give the engine compartment a thorough eye-balling for loose stuff.

Sounds like your car may be "Dieseling" , this can be from either low octane gas or improper timing. Try a higher grade of Petrol, and get your timing checked.
