There are un-Biblical legends that Adam had a wife before Eve who was named Lilith. The legends vary significantly, but they all essentially agree that Lilith left Adam because she did not want to submit to him. According to the legends, Lilith was an evil, wicked woman who committed adultery with Satan and produced a race of evil creatures. None of this is true. There is no Biblical basis whatsoever for these concepts. There is no one in the Bible named Lilith. Genesis chapter 1 does not record the creation of Lilith with Genesis chapter 2 recording the creation of Eve. Rather, Genesis chapter 2 is a "closer look" at the creation of Adam and Eve as recorded in Genesis chapter 1. The Bible specifically says that Adam and Eve were the first human beings ever created (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:18-25). This "Lilith" myth is popular in some radical feminist movements because Lilith is an example of a woman refusing to submit to male headship.

No one knows who the first woman really was. We call her Eve, but no one really knows.
According to the Bible Eve is the first woman. Lilith is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible. She is a myth. Adam and Eve may have been a myth too. Obviously there was a first man and a first woman, but no one really knows anything about them other than the stories that were handed down for generations and later came to be written down.
And to the person who said the Lilith Fair is a lesbian sex festival, you are wrong. It was a music festival that was started by Sarah McLachlan (a straight woman!) because she felt that woman musicians didn't get enough recognition in the male-dominated music world. All of the lead vocalists in the Lilith Fair were women, and the festival ran for three summers in 1997, 1998, and 1999. Lilith Fair hasn't happened since them. It did have a huge lesbian following, but the original idea of Lilith Fair had nothing to do with any kind of sexual orientation.

First of all, it depends on which translation of the holy scriptures that you are reading. The Bible, is a book that is a translation of the holy scriptures. The holy scriptures were certainly not written in English. Lilith is a translation. Different religions use different translations of the holy scriptures, or bible. In the King James Version, there is no Lilith, and the place where it translates to Lilith being Adam's first wife, in the KJV, it was a screeching owl.
In the Guggenheim translation, Lilith was actually Cain's wife and sister. I believe the Torah has mention of a Lilith too. But in the KJV, which is the one that I feel is the best English translation of the holy scriptures, there is no mention of any Lilith, and the first woman was and is considered to be Eve.

Actually when you think about it Eve would not submit to Adam either, Adam let her control him, thats why he blamed her for the fruit episode, and why he did not properly train her to stay away from it in the first place, because he was letting her run everything. Think about it, she was kind of overbearing for the first Women/wife. Adam was probably there when she ate the fruit and he let her do it. The demon seed they talk about is the Nephilim and that was rumored to be from Satan and his angel's (Genesis 6) marrying humans and not from satan and Lillith.

Lilith appears primarily in Judaism. She is neither "made up" (or no more made up than Eve) nor is she an invention of feminists. Lilith was made from dust, like Adam, and refused to allow him dominion over her. She was banished from the garden by God and Eve was created from Adam's flesh (incidentally, the "rib" of Adam is not Hebrew word for an actual rib, but actually the penile bone than most animals have, but humans lack, using hydrolics instead.)
Since there are two versions of human creation in the Bible (one with man and woman being made on the same day from dust and a second one with man being lonely over a period of time and woman being created from his ribs), it was understood that Lilith was the first, dusty one, and once banished, Eve was created to alleiviate Adam's loneliness.
Lilith appears in many other Jewish myths as the mother of demons and the race of giants. (Remember Goliath? He came from somewhere, you know!) Some have also speculated that she became pregnant prior to leaving the Garden and that her child was Cain's wife.
In the middle ages, Lilith and her daughters were seen as the patronesses of witches. Witches (and Lilith herself) were accused of sending their spectres to rape innocent men while they slept. These women and demons were known as succubi. Christians no longer believe this stuff as they've returned to a more strict interpretation of the Bible and a discarding of many of the old Jewish myths, but Lilith is certainly not "new".
As for what *I* believe, I'm not a Christian so I don't believe in Adam. Without Adam, there can neither be Eve or Lilith, so....

Lillith is the queen of the demons. She was the first woman banished to the abyss, but there are many tales and stories about why she was sent. Thats about as much as I can tell you.

Lilith is one myth, Eve is the other myth. Some beleive Lilith was first and Eve was second, but according to the bible Eve was the only one.
Of course if Lilith did exist, this could explain why there was other people on the earth at the time Cain killed Able.
Could be that Adam and lilith had many children who had children before Eve was created, thus explaining who these other people were that Cain was afraid of.

Lilith is mentioned in some cirlces as the lover of the devil.
In Jewish Kabalah tradition, the Midrash says that she was the first wife of Adam, who would not obey the rules of G-d. She left Paradise and G-d banished her forever, and gave Eve to Adam as a wife.
It is also said that G-d ordered Lilith to kill 100 of the babies she would have---so as not to send more non-believers into the world. For this reason, many old cultures tie red ribbons on the baby's crib, to protect him from Lilith.

Is this a trick question? Awe come on, the Lillithfair story is bogus we all know that one and where it came from. But think about this for a moment.
If we are created in the image of God, both man and woman, and the creative power Adam and Eve were commanded to use by God is obviously part of that creation "in His image", then it follows in the order of the creation that we have a Mother there.
Eve, yes first woman placed here on this earth, but the first woman.....I think not.
