My sons brother in law has done this for years. There is nothing wrong with it but the baby may crawl out now and then and come in your room. My son and daughter in law puts 4 pillows on the floor because my grandson was falling out of bed. Do what ever as long as it keeps the baby safe.

RE:
Is there anything wrong with putting the mattress and box spring directly on the floor without a frame?
My wife wants to do that because our 18 month old daughter sometimes falls out of bed. Having the bed lower would tend to decrease the impact.
We have other family members that say it doesn't look good if there is no frame and the mattress is on the floor. Is there anything wrong with...

My main objection to doing so is the difficulty of 'making' the bed. I'm sure your daughter will eventually want to be in a 'big girl' bed, so if you want to put the box spring and mattress on the floor for a year or so, go ahead. However, I would definitely try to find some kind of colored - perhaps quilted if you can find it - fitted sheet and put it around the box spring that will be resting on the floor. Then get another matching or complementary fitted sheet to put around the mattress, and with a nice comforter as a combination top sheet and blanket, the bed can be 'made' very quickly and easily - though still somewhat of a back-stretch for your or your wife. Presumably your daughter is still taking daily naps anyway, so maybe her bed doesn't need to be 'made' all the time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a box spring & mattress on the floor. The esthetics are in the eye of the beholder. No one should let others tell them what looks good & what doesn't. If you're fine with it then go for it. There are childrens beds on the market with frames that are very low to the ground also. So, if you're worried what others think you can look into getting one of those.
As for bugs... They'll crawl onto a framed bed as easily as one on the floor. So that is not a factor.

My answer is yes, by placing your springs/mattress on the floor several things could happen.
First, according to several manufactures of beds state that it will cause the lifespan of your bed to be cut in half by putting it directly on the floor.
Another thing to think about is mold and mildew. The box springs are designed to support the mattress and provide airflow around them. Without air circulating under and beside the bed, the moisture that is in the air, with the moisture from when you sweat at night provide the perfect breeding ground for mold and/or mildew. Even if you have carpeted floors, that will not provide the proper "breathing" room for the set.
My suggestion would be to invest in some inexpensive guard rails to install. My best friend just used four kitchen chairs, which worked quite well, until her son learned not to fall out of bed.
Good Luck!

There's nothing wrong with putting the mattress on the floor. The bed frame doesn't do anything more than raise the height of the bed. It doesn't matter if it looks good to family members, or not. Your daughter's safety is the focus, not visual affect. I say to go for the floor:)

Do what you and your wife feel is best. You are the parents not the other so called family members.
I have my matresses on the floor for many years now.
There is no mold or mildew on my box spring, as others have suggested might occur.
The hardest part is putting on and taking off the sheets, and it really isnt that hard.
I have a fitted sheet of a solid color covering the box spring to make it "look" nicer.

There is nothing wrong with putting them on the floor. It looks different BUT will not hurt you or the mattress/box spring. Maybe your 18 mo old daughter should have her own bed.

If you have wooden floors or laminated wood, the box spring will scratch it.
You cannot dress up the bed with the skirt and all. The best you can do is double up a fitted sheet fitted for the box spring and another fitted for the mattress itself.
Bugs can climb easily. Watch out for house spiders, ants? and other floor crawlies. Those can bite the baby or lodge in their ears etc.
A toddler can sleep in a childs bed with side rails, or in their crib for a few more months. The childs bed with the rails have short legs for a childs legs .
If it was your bed that you are asking about, its doesnt look nice, you are right.
However, having said that, it is your house and your bed and if you can live with the arrangement, it should be alright.

Absolutely not. In fact, I did that myself when I was younger because I was scared someone was under my bed all the time (after seeing "Halloween" for the first time). I do recommend that you put a zippered sleeve on your box spring to protect it and keep dust and other things from getting on it while it's on the floor. As for it looking bad, nah. If you dress it up nice, no one will know or they'll all want to do it!
