Paper products are the main things that I refuse to buy in generic brands. Paper towels usually take twice as many as a thicker name brand to clean up a mess. Generic tissues are like using sandpaper on your nose. . .and the less said about generic toilet paper, the better.

As far as canned goods are concerned, I'll try them once and see if I like them. All generics aren't created equal, and in a high-end grocery store like Schnuck's or Meijer's, they're usually just fine. Aldi's or Save-a-lot's generics may not be worth buying again.

I'm willing to keep an open mind about most generic brands except for those paper products.

I refuse to buy the generic brand of chocolate chip cookie dough. Once when I was living in Iowa City, I bought Cub Foods brand chocolate chip cookie dough thinking it would taste just as good as Pillsbury or Nestle Tollhouse brand and it was awful. I vowed never again to buy an off-brand of cookie dough.

I refust to do this with medicines--For example--with antibiotics, etc..for two reasons--first of all--sometimes they are coated more cheaply--and I have expereinced adn heard from others that they are not the same...so they are tougher on the stomach...and secondly, it is mostly psychological--when a person is sick--that is the last moment when they need to feel like they are skimping and saving a few bucks to get a second best item..getting what is perceived as the best makes the person buying the meds and the person taking them, feel like they are doing their "best" to help the situation...

Mayo-only Hellman's
Ketchup-Heinz
Cake mixes
Milk

Most things I can live with the store brand. Growing up we were raised on really generic foods. You know the food in the yellow boxes with black printing? OH and goverment subsidy foods. Govr'n ment cheese as it's called.

Cigarettes - they tastes aweful
Butter - it doesn't work as well in many dishes
Mayo - Blue Plate is the only REAL mayonnaise
Mustard - French's is the best
Tea - I like my Lipton's and the other stuff tastes completely different

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head =)

Ketchup, only Heinz will do. Seriously.

Mayo, only Best Foods or Hellmans.
Ranch dressing, only Dion's (an Albuquerque pizza company, no other ranch compares).
Kellogg's Rice Krispies.
Toliet paper, only Charmin will do.

Most generic versions of food are fine with me. Generic toilet paper, however, will not cut it.
