I know not a lot about the visa I have to get as I enter bangkok. Does it cost me any money? I am planning to stay for around 5/6 months with my brothers that stay there for most of the year as they have wives and children there. I am however 25 and am open to any suggestions about where to visit, how much money I need for the stay, visa, working there if I can so I don't have to save as much before I go ect...
Any advice will be apprieciated.
Sheralee.

You can stay for 2 months at a time on a tourist visa, to extend it you must leave the country and re-enter the country, these "visa trips" are run everyday from bangkok and I'd recommend you go to Cambodia, it costs about £40 and you leave at 7am ish and are back in bangkok by about 9pm. If you over stay your visa like I did you pay a daily fine for each day (about £5 per day).

If you're staying in a hotel make sure it is one with air-con, you can find one's just off the main roads in bangkok for between 500 - 800 baht (£4-£8) per day. You can get cheaper ones but believe me they're horrifying.

Try the Rose Hotel which is just off the Sukumvit Road near Soi 3 (near the Grace Hotel) it is clean, cheap and shows all premiership footy matches.

The visa you refer to is the 30 day transit visa cost 1000 baht at Bangkok Airport. This visa is not extendable and you will have to leave the country and re-enter for another one. You can do this 3 times. You will be better getting a non immigrant visa. Check out the visa types on 'thaiconsul' website. I have just applied for a 1 year visa by post - no problems.Downloaded the forms and sent them off.

With current bombings and other violence now, the Government there have tightened up the rules. "Visa run" as they call it is very punitive and cumbersome. It is basically for people who want to stay more than 3 months. People normally go to Myanmar or Vietnam or Cambodia and re-enter. Locals know the routine.

You will be considered a bank, literally. They will fleece you for every little thing. You will need about $1000 per mo. to live comfortably all room+board in.

But the country is great. If you get to know people it is not a bad place to spend sometime (like 6 months) there. Weather in Nov. thru March is quite nice in norther parts of the country, like Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai.

before you go you need to get a double entry tourist visa valid for 60 days plus a 30 day extension. You can then do 3 30 day visa trips to the border start at 6 or 7am get back say 3pm cost 2400 baht approx.

Dont know how much the visa costs contact your nearest Thai embassy or consulate not much.

Try talking to your brothers since they live there they will know the costs. Also there are literally dozens of websites. try a google search.

Work wise it is illegal and you wouldnt want to be a waiter working for 4 quid a day anyhow. However oppurtunities exist for English Teachers be you ever so illegal and unqualified maybe 20 quid a day. Some people live on that and have a damm good time.

Since you dont say where your from what skills you have apart form not being able to spell Thailand dont worry doesnt disqualify you from being a English Teacher here, difficult to give you much advice.

Cost wise you can go out and spend 20 quid or 2000 doesnt mean you are going to have 100 timnes the fun but for sure you will have more spending more. I would be willing to bet wherever your from that you can have more fun spending 20 quid in Thailand than 2000 quid in your home town.

Food booze and woman cheap Best places for tourist destinations Pattaya and Phucket. Bangkok a big dirty metropolis but major nightlife Nane RCA for discos etc, again read some websites. Chilling out on beaches Kog Chang Koh Samet mountains elephant treking jungle Chaing Mai.

Dont know what interests you have but as long as its not ice skating or similar Thailand has it.

Before you come two words or warning firstly you are unlikely to go home. I dont kid you your brothers know, I meet many tourists but rarely one on ther first excursion. Secondly at one point you will encounter Thailands Play for Pay scene as much as you think you will never do so or would never fall in love there is a good chance you will. Once you hear yourself utter the phrase shes different/special go home because she isnt.

Opps appendum just saw your name persume your female or your parents had a wierd sense of humour. Advice still holds except change phrase to hes different/special.

Additional gender specific advice Guys can be found in gay gogo bars or karioke its amazing how many woman mainly thais you see there. Also you love life may suffer some woman compare the whole of thailand to a gay area since most blokes dont try an pick them up. Sorry but guys come to Thailand for the Thai girls and yes they would prefer to pay for them rather than spend time with you for free. Khoa san rd in bangkok has a large backpacker (i.e. poor)community so you may find some blokes there.

Thailand just passed stricter new visa laws. You can get a 30-day tourist visa when you land at no cost, but it can only be renewed for two more 30-day periods. Then you must leave the country and re-enter to start the process over - so a side trip to a neighboring country is in order. There are strict penalties for overstaying your visa:

I would recommend a multiple entry non-immigrant visa. It is valid for one year and you must leave the country every 90 days. It costs approximately $125 USD and the visa runs to leave the country and return are roughly $60 USD every 90 days...not 3 months, 90 days and they do count them now. It is better than a tourist visa and less hassle.

Thailand is a wonderfull place with all that you could want you will enjoy it. you can get a free 30 day visa on arrival but if you go to the thai embassy london a month before you plan to travel they can give you a 3 month visa for around £20, beware as the embassy only opens from 9am-12am mon to fri. go to chang mai/ rai in the north for culture, beach bumming in koh samui/ panyang/toa in the gulf of thailand and its great in phuket, krabi, rayli, or the pe pe island.
Ask your brothers and get yourself a lonely planet book on thailand they are invaluable with all sorts of hints and tips on everything that you may need to know.
One tip dont take to much with you as you can get anything that you need there at a fraction of the cost, ie diesel jeans uk price £120, thai price £8.
You get around 60 baht for £1 and i would recommed taking sterling or $ss as you will find that you get a lot better rate out in thailand. i made over £1000 that way just last year, and try to take as much as you can and you will live like a king.
As for working its a waste of time as the average wage is around £20 a month but you can sometimes find some english teaching around. i wouldnt bother as you can live so cheaply out there, just enjoy.
Im so envious.
Takecare.

You can find out more about the 30 day tourist visa exemption from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department's website. This is a link to the relevant page:-
