It's sad that when you ask a serious question, jokers pour out of the woodwork. First of all, most homeopathic cures have, at best, a placebo effect. The most effective supplement mentioned above is saw palmetto, but be aware that it may accomplish it's work by decreasing testosterone levels, which won't help your sex life one bit.

Second, this condition, called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is not cancer. That doesn't mean that he doesn't have cancer, just that this isn't a symptom. He should have a consultation with your regular doctor, and then a urologist. They will probably run a blood test, called a PSA test, as a cancer screen. But the real diagnosis will require a transrectal ultrasound and a biopsy. Your husband will be uncomfortable with this, but it's necessary.

Next, this isnt' an infection. It can't be treated with antibiotics or antiinflamatories. It's a fact of life that all men experience some degree of BPH as they age.

Next, run from anyone who offers him hormone replacement therapy. Testosterone will help his libido, but not his BPH. It may encourage the growth of subclinical prostate cancers.

As for treatment, challenge your doctor if he recommends Flomax, or similar drugs. It's been found that Flomax causes permanent changes to the eyes, which may cause a problem if your husband ever needs cataract surgery. http://www.aao.org/news/release/20051114.cfm

The definitive treatment for obstructive BPH is surgery. This is a very simple surgery, and is often done on an outpatient basis. Basically, an instrument is inserted in his penis which will remove the central part of his prostate. If you are in Canada or Europe, there is an alternative procedure which uses focussed ultrasound to ablate the prostate. It sounds worse than it is: the psychological hurdles are more difficult than the surgery.

Saw palmetto and its extracts have been used as alternative medicine options for treating a number of bodily ailments over the years. This herbal remedy, which is rich in phytosterols and fatty acids, has been very popular over the years, especially in its application for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. According to statistics for 2010, over 2 million men across the world use saw palmetto supplements for the treatment of prostate ailments, having grown steadily from its initial documented usage among a handful of Native Americans about 200 years ago.

I suggest all natural Saw Palmetto Complex. It has been very successful in shrinking an enlarged prostate as well as preventing and lessening benign prostatic hyperplasia. Symptoms are frequent urination, decreased urinary flow. This complex maintains proper urinary flow.

It's a blend of natural ingredients - saw palmetto berry extract, pumpkin seed oil, and enriched sources of beta-sitosterols and other valuable phytosterols.

He needs to see a medical specialist known as a urologist. This is not something to mess around with. While a simple infection can cause such problems, the worst case is cancer. If cancer, there are a number of options. But once the cancer leaves the prostate, the game is over. You can slow it down but you can't kill it. So go see a urologist. Go with your husband because men are lousy at asking enough questions.

Hi Kimber

Here are some ideas to help heal.

Natural Cures

Aromatherapy: The following essential oils can help to reduce symptoms of BPH: bergamot, chamomile, sandalwood, and tea tree oil.

Ayurveda: Ashwagandha, an Ayurvedic herb, can help to relieve symptoms.

Diet: Avoid foods that are high in unhealthy saturated fats and low in fiber. Also avoid alcohol, caffeine, simple carbohydrates, sugars and sugar products, hydrogenated and partially-hydrogenated fats and oils, margarine, shortening, and all processed and commercial "junk" food. Instead, emphasize a diet of organic whole foods, with plenty of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables, oats, whole grains, nuts and seeds, especially pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Minimize your intake of red meat, but be sure to consume adequate amounts of organic, free-range poultry and wild-caught fish. Throughout the day, also drink plenty of pure, filtered water, and avoid drinking—as well as bathing, and showering in—unfiltered tap water, because tap water contains heavy metals and pesticide residues that can settle in high concentrations in the prostate gland, causing a variety of prostate problems. Also avoid foods that are overly spicy.

Flower Essences: Crab Apple and Pine can both be useful for men with prostate problems.

Herbs: Useful herbs for preventing and treating BPH include saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), Pygeum africanum, and nettle root (Urtica diocia). Milk thistle can also be effective because of its ability to detoxify the liver and improve hormone balance.

Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies for BPH include Apis mellifica, causticum, chiaphilla umbellate, clematis, lycopodium, pulsatilla, and thuja.

Juice Therapy: Combine red cabbage, celery, and lettuce juice, and drink 8 ounces twice a day.

Lifestyle: Be sure to exercise regularly, at least three times a week for 30 minutes each time. Avoid bicycling, however, as this can place pressure on the prostate gland.

Also take care to properly manage stress and reduce your overall stress levels.

Engaging in regular sex (two to four times a week) with your partner can also be helpful, as sex helps to reduce the buildup of pressure on the prostate. If you don`t have a sex partner, masturbation can also help.

Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy (NHRT): NHRT can often quickly resolve prostate problems related to hormone deficiencies and imbalances. The most commonly used hormone for this purpose is natural testosterone, which works not only to improve prostate problems, but can also help to enhance sexual mood and protect against impotence.

NHRT should only be undertaken under the supervision of a physician trained in its use. Such practitioners will first assess your testosterone levels, as well as other hormones, using either a hormone blood or saliva test. Testosterone can then be boosted, if necessary, by weekly or biweekly injections of either testosterone cypionate (weekly) or testosterone enanthate (biweekly) until your testosterone levels are restored to those of a healthy 30 year-old male. Testosterone patches and oral lozenges can also be used in place of injections. Many holistic practitioners recommended testosterone skin creams (transdermal creams) as the best treatment option, due to the fact that is appears to be the safest approach and least likely to cause side effects.

Note: Should you choose to explore testosterone replacement therapy, be sure that your physician regularly monitors your PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels to safeguard yourself against BPH and prostate cancer. You should also be screened for liver toxicity, as well as high blood pressure and elevated red blood cell counts, testicle shrinkage, and gynecomastia (abnormal mammary glands in men) during the course of your treatment. In addition, men receiving testosterone replacement therapy are advised to also supplement with the herb saw palmetto, to help ensure that testosterone does not get converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can lead to prostate cancer, as well as other health problems.

Best of health to both of you
