I had a root canal 21 years ago. As I remember it (and, boy, I DO remember it!), it wasn't the root canal that hurt, it was the abcessing of the tooth that required the root canal procedure. After the tooth was drained and I had taken antibiotic to relieve the infection, etc., the only pain I suffered at the dentist office was from an injection, and that was minimal. I didn't feel anything at all during the procedure. I'm sure most dentist's could not be accused of just trying to be nice. Your doc is telling it straight up. Get in there and get it fixed already. The dentist doesn't "grant" medical leave. Your employer is the person who determines how much time you have coming for certain things. I'm sure the dentist office will give you documentation that you had the procedure done and when. That's what you will turn in at work. I know I went back to work the day after I had mine done, and it was no big deal. I think I was just taking Tylenol or something.

Root canals are not pleasant in general but are not painful unless the tooth is abscessed to the point novocaine doesn't work. The dentist or oral surgeon will be able to tell you after the first shot how you are doing. They will usually do some poking around to see if you need another shot. The second shot does not hurt at all. The most important thing is to be calm when you get the shot if you jump it make it feel alot worst. On a scale I would say the shot will feel like a good pinch to your gum.

If they are going to knock you out they use an IV which is like a shot they don't pull out. They don't give you the shot in your mouth until your out. You have to have a driver and will not be allowed to return to work that day. Remember to follow the eating and drinking instructions or things could get real messy if you lie.

The person doing this procedure should come in to talk to you before they start. Ask them all the questions you want and tell you what you fear and they will do their best to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Gas ??? Never had gas

After wards if you get headaches everyday for three or four days go back because the temporary crown is not the right height.

Root canals do not hurt. I have had 3 and I'm scheduled for 2 more. It takes 2 sessions of about 2-3 hours each. The first session he grinds the tooth down to a nub and digs the nerve out. The he packs it with medicine and covers it with a temporary crown. This is all done after the area is completely numb.

When your real crown comes in from the lab you go back and he unpacks the tooth and puts the permanent crown on. The worst part of root canal surgery is holding your mouth open for so long.

You will not be granted any sick time off. I have my appointments at 8 in the morning and I am at work by 11:00 that morning.

I have had 2 root canals they don't hurt much at all. The worst part is just getting the shots in your gums to numb the pain when the dentist is doing the work on the tooth. Other than that it is pain less if you have a good dentist that knows what he is doing you should be in and out of the office in a hour.

if our tooth already dead you should not have much discomfort. In this case root canals are usually done in one visit. Your dentist will provide the anesthetic, but you should let him know if you feeling anything. It is a good idea to take some painkiller (like Advil) before any dental appointment. You definitely do not need a medical leave after a root canal, unless you have very bad abscess. You will be amazed how easy it is going to be.

I dreaded my root canal procedure, but it was almost painless. The only time it bothered me was when after removing the nerve and putting in a temporary filling, the next week he searched to make sure he got all the nerve out and hit one, which hurt of an instant.
Other wise it was a painless procedure and I wondered why people made such a big deal about root canal work. The only down side, is that it take several visits before the final permanent filling is put in.

root canal kills the tooth in its entirety along with the strength of the tooth - there is none now ; without supply to the tooth; it will need a crown which can crack and break along with the now dead tooth; dentists are root canal happy; everything should be done to save the life in the tooth; root canal makes a great money venture for the dentist ; then the crown ; then the replacement until you loose the tooth altogether - oops time for dental implant then ; investigate all avenues before that one tooth leads down the path described -

They do lie ; I had one who wanted to put me out to take out all 4 wisdom teeth ; told him to take out only the one bothering me ; he told me other impact and need to come out ;declined; years later another dentist told me that I didn' t have wisdom teeth on top ; never did , never will ; would show up on xray - so prior dentist wanted the money and splice my gums to make it look good

I had two root canals...the first one I had was the LEAST painful dentist experience I ever had, and the second one was awful. I believe most of the pain of the second one was when he was actually destroying and pulling the nerve out, but my tooth wasn't dead. If yours is, I really don't think you will feel anything, it should be fine - good luck!
