Go to the AKC website and do some breed research. Your idea of big may be different from mine. To me-50 pounds is big. You may be thinking 120 pounds. Plus, with out knowing how much you will exercise the dog, the type of yard you have, if the dog will be kept in the house, interest level of the child-it is hard to say. You also have to account for the time it will take to train the dog and how long it may take the dog to mature. Just getting opinions and "my dog was great" stories may not give the clear picture. I grew up around St Bernards-however, they have medical issues that can be costly, they drool and shed and slobber, they can scale a fence, tend to be docile and don't want a ton of exercise, will cost a lot to feed, and sadly have a short life span. It's best to sit down and come up with a list of what your family is like/ready for (how often do you exercise, who will clean up after the dog, who is in charge of feeding).
