Wouldn't surprise me at all if butts(cigs) are banned. People trying to tell yu all over the world when and where yu can smoke anymore. PLUS the price is outrageous and the tax imposed per pack is astronomical too. Government still getting a big chunk of money for the sale of booze(at least in the U>S>) because it is sold in "State Stores" run by the state. I think it is safe for a while because they would lose too much profit if the banned it. I think if the cigarette companies gave a bigger "cut" to the gov't they would stop trying to ban them too. (Just an opinion) Booze kills just as much as cigs do. I never heard of anyone dying from a driver who was smoking and ran into them like you hear so much about drunk driving. If you don't want to be near a smoker, move to another seat. Most restaurants have different sections. Why should the non smokers have a bigger section than the smokers(which is the case most everywhere). Why not 50/50? In a bar you don't have smoking and non smoking(bar only, not food) And you don't have a wine only section, beer only section, liquor only section either. Us smokers rights are being infringed on more and more every day and they are letting the non smokers get away with it. Where are the smoker rights???Sorry, I got a little off topic. !!!

I don't care what they do with the cigarettes, although they have done enough. But, I think they should ban alcohol. I honestly believe alcohol is causing more harm then the cigarettes. Yes, cigarettes can cause cancer. But, on the other hand has the goverment ever taken a servey on how many alcohol related deaths there has been in the US. I bet it is triple the amount of cigarette deaths. Not only deaths, how many homes have been ruined because of alcohol? I honestly think the gove. should make it a law that if you are going to drink alcohol you have to do it at home. If there was a way to get rid of alcohol I would be the first one to sign the petition. I hate the stuff. A neighbor and I was talking about this last night. She hates it also..............Do you know of a way to get rid of the stuff? If so, please post it.Thanks

The already tried alcohol (prohibition in the US in the 20's), and it was a spectacular failure. I doubt they'd do it again.
One of the lessons learned from that episode was that making something illegal doesn't keep people from using it in any way. So governments accepted that it was going to be used, and made it legal so they could tax it and get revenue. Too bad they didn't learn that lesson about marijuana, cocaine, etc.
Most governments are trying "social pressure" to reduce smoking -- making it harder to find a place to smoke in public, and getting the non-smokers to put social pressure on the smokers to quit. It seems to work better than banning it outright, which I doubt they'd do.

I don't think either will ever be banned...at least not in the US.

Alcohol is a multi-billion dollar business here in the US. During the prohibition, the government lost $500 million a year in excise taxes. Alcohol is the highest taxed commodity in the US. Over half the price of a bottle is tax. If the government is making billions of dollars off of the alcohol and cigarette industry, why would they slit their own throats by banning it?

No. They alreeady tried banning alcohol here in the USA and it was called Prohibition and it didn't work and what it did was create a huge organized wealthy crime mob and the same would go for cigarettes too. Don't be surprised if they start to legalize marijuana here as it is already starting to happen.

How much tax income goes into the government hands with each sale of tobacco or alcohol? A person once said that "the business of America is business" I think Charles Wilson referred to every government in the world.

No, the money will stay with the government.

U know I have never understood how it's ok for alcohol n cigerettes to be legal when it is always killing people but yet something like weed is illegal and it is even proven to help for pain. It's the government as long as there making money they don't care.I don't think it will ever be banned.

While it is difficult for the general population to produce tobacco in any quantity, alcohol is relatively easy to produce, and would therefore be difficult to ban, by the way, smoking is not pleasant for people who have to be near smokers, so the new ban in public places, April in Wales, and July in England will make going out a bit more pleasant! Doubt it, the government make too much money on taxes from alcohol and tobacco products. Look what happened in the USA in the 1920's when they banned alcohol, there was far more crime.

It's a business. As long as they are people willing to kill themselves there will be people willing to sale it to them. Plus you have to understand no one is making them buy these things and make them drink or smoke. If anything we should teach people to say no verse lighting up or drinking up. I honestly think that people bring the trouble not the drinking and smoking. Besides those are all big business and unless we get a moral government that will never happen. Who do you think pays most of the those people?
